Surprisingly google is getting me no where with this question- any idea where I can get a safety test on my car? And how much it costs? Can you recommend a place in particular?

My personal reco is True Tech Auto. In fact, I was there this morning, and Paul helped me test my charging system and replaced my battery in just 15 minutes, enabling me to made it to work on time. Great service there.

We have many good auto shops in town. I know Rob from Master Mechanic, and he is definitely a good guy too.

^ You mean Oil Changers on Main/Bronte? They don't have licensed mechanics there, it's an oil change and Emissions test facility only, but if one needed an Emissions Test, they and Master Mechanic are the fastest and most efficient.

I've been satisfied taking my car to Oil changers and like places that don't do mechanical repairs. Although they may not be able to help if your car fails the test, they conversely have no interest in screwing you over to get more $$ out of your pocket for repairs, and they're fast.

Perhaps a bit cynical of me to conclude that *all* auto repair shops are out to f^[# you (although not far off) but the philosophy works for me.

BTW, wasn't McGuilty going to kill off the emissions testing cuz most of the old heavy polluters are off the road at this point? Hard to give up a tax grab now that we're all used to it.

Part of the reason to take your car in for regular oil changes is also to have someone who knows WTF they are doing to inspect your vehicle for things that are breaking. People who have seen your car and other cars before and know what to look for before things get out of hand. And it is EXTREMELY rare that a mechanic would try to f**K you out of your money. There are WAY too many cars in need of repair to make this necessary.

Part of the confusion is people are unwilling to replace something unless it is totally broken. If I tell you your timing belt is due for a change, and the next guy says you can maybe go another 10,000km, then you'll think that I was trying to screw you over. When in reality that timing belt will go sometime, but nobody can predict when. You think the other guy is a better mechanic when really he was just bullshitting you to sound like a good guy.


You hit the nail on the head... IME there are as many shisters (sp ?) as there are good honest mechanics. I suppose if you find one that gives you the warm and fuzzies then stick with him. I'm fortunate to have a technical background and did the hotrod thing when I was younger so I have more than half a clue about repairs. Perhaps what works for me may not be the best thing for the general public. If you need a 40 point inspection along with your emissions test then a repair shop that does both would be the better choice.

I've always felt that licenses don't fix cars, but rather, people fix cars. To sign off on a safety certificate, you have to be licensed, but anyone can learn about cars. I know enough to work at a shop through a really good shop teacher in high school, years of watching, learning, applying, and doing, but I can't without a license. Because I'm not licensed, it's illegal for me to work on someone elses's brakes except for my own.

That said, I define a good mechanic as someone who does the job right, does it fast, communicates well, doesn't over-up-sell, charges fairly, doesn't pressure you into any repairs unless needed (i.e. tells you what can wait and what needs immediate attention), or stretch the truth on things.

There are less and less people getting into trades these days. If they relax the requirements and apprentice hours needed to become a mechanic, I may consider gunning for that license someday.

Agreed on your comments although I didn't realize that you had to be licensed to change someone else's brakes. That's the law ?
I better not tell my relatives... on the other hand...

It is, but clearly it's not enforced as brake parts can be bought at retail, but it's one of those things where if I do your brakes and I'm unlicensed, and then you crash, you could blame me for screwing up your brakes, and your insurance might sue me to the Stone Ages.

That said, a lot of people still do their own brakes, even when they don't know the proper techniques and the key areas to clean and lubricate. Some of my neighbours over the years who do their brakes don't even have proper tools, and don't clean the moving parts nor use the proper lube (or any lube). Nobody should touch their brakes unless they really know what they're doing, because they'll be stuck if they break a slider pin bolt head, don't have the tools to loosen a stubbornly tight 17mm caliper bracket bolt, or run into seized slider pins and have never used a propane torch. I know some people who are even too cheap to buy anti-seize compound or caliper lube. :roll:
