I am considering purchasing a tablet in the near future, but there are so many out there I am not sure which one is best for my needs. I already have an iphone, so I know with an ipad I can use icloud. I am just looking for something basically to go on the internet with that is portable to take to work, trips, yet has a bigger screen than my iphone. I will be laid up in the fall after surgery and I thought a tablet would be easier for me to manage and carry about than a laptop. I have a desktop at home so if I need to do anything else I can.

So I am looking for feedback from those that have tablets and those who have various opinions on whats available out there.

Thanks bunches!

This is going to turn into a huge argument, but for the price, the PlayBook has been awesome for my needs. My wife has an iPhone, and has a PlayBook as well. She uses the PlayBook much more often.

I'm really surprised that the Playbook gets used more than an iPhone. To be honest, I don't know what use I have for my Playbook (I have an iPad-work, Playbook-work and a HP Touchpad-mine).

I use the iPad the most as it has a data plan on it and gets my corporate email. It also has much better availability of games. Trying to find a game for a 1 year old on a Touchpad/Playbook is a challenge. iPad has tons of stuff.

For travel I usually take the iPad and the Touchpad. The touchpad is a fine machine for playing movies and load it up with a video player called Kalemsoft. If you are holed up and want to do work and play games, then buy an iPad. If you want to just watch tv/movies that you've downloaded from the intarweb, then the Touchpad or a Playbook should do you just fine and save you some $.

I have an Android Tablet - the Asus transformer prime. Great tablet - absolutely love it. I've had no issues with it at all and have found lots of games (free) for my young kids.

Considering the OP is looking for a tablet for web surfing and portable, I'd recommend the Playbook-it's has a very capable web browser and a growing selection of apps. If you have a need for the greater app selection that iPad offers, then go that route, although you lose portability somewhat.

I can't comment on any Android as I have not used one extensively (but my friend has an Asus Transformer and loves it)

I have a Playbook and an iPad. Between those 2 and based on what OP is looking for, the Playbook wins hands down. you can't beat it for the price.
If you want 200 fart apps instead of just 50, and don't mind paying an extra $3-400, then by all means go for the iPad (and with that I will now slowing, quietly, back out of this thread :))

This is the one I have - with the keyboard dock as well. it's fantastic. I paid 499 for the tablet + 149 for the dock. not sure if pricing has come down at all.

I got a Kobo tablet around x-mas and returned it. It just wasn't the experience that I wanted/didn't have the apps that I wanted on that version of android plus the touch part didn't always work properly. I went the ebay route and purchased a used iPad 2. Got a good deal and now I'm very satisfied. If you are worried about the price, lots on ebay.

I've got the Transformer Prime as well, and it definitely is a great tablet. However, if you're not in need of one immediately, I'd wait for the Nexus 7 tablet. It's got similar specs to the Transformer (quad-core Tegra 3, 12 core GPU, 1GB RAM) and is rumoured to be priced at $200 and $250 for 8GB and 16GB models.

Im sorry......but Ipad takes the cake- be it an ipad 2 or 3. I am not just saying it because I am an apple sheep....but simply because they make the best product for your money. I have an android tablet as well as phone- but in terms of tablet functionality you will not find anything better than the ipad.

for one- you get the app store- that alone is worth the cost of the device. Everything and anything you will need is there- and you wont have compatibility issues as you will with android devices because unlike the apple app store which ONLY works for apple products ( therefore all devices are supported ) the android market is open- meaning anything in a sense , can be uploaded and what works with one device may not work with yours.

second, who cares about specs- without a doubt there are better tablets hardware wise than the ipad- but that is because that is the only thing they have going for themselves in terms of marketing power. No one will be able to touch apples app store and functionality so they push the bigger better screens, faster hardware etc which on a tablet- really means nothing. Even though your ipad is slower than most of the other new tablets out there- all the software you will find for it is optimized for it therefore hardware horsepower is not that important- especially for your needs.

take the leap that I , and millions of others have already made- get the ipad. Its #1 for a reason and the most important reason- the use experience.
