Hi,
Planning on visiting Montreal soon.
We will bring our 3 kids (5, 14, 16).

Any suggestions or places highly recommended to visit, places to eat and shop etc....

Montreal is a great place. You will love it. I usually travel there for business and don't know much about whats available regarding "tourist stuff" for kids. You should check out just for laughs, go into "old Montreal", you can book a bus tour on those double decker busses & do some shopping on St.Catharines street.
The hotel that I stay at is called Le Ste Martin. The food , service and suites are absolutely beautiful.

As for accommodations, I've always had great luck spending under $100/night for a 4* in the downtown area using priceline.

Take the kids to the Biodome...such a great place... There's also a big orange...I'm not sure what it's called...they sell Orange Julep...it's cool to go to! I have never had anything from there, but seeing that big orange is cool! Especially if you are driving and go past Colborne, ON, on the way, you can see the big apple

+1 for Schwartz (try their half-sour pickles and make sure your smoked meat is medium fat)

I didn't enjoy old Monteral, was rather boring other than the Christmas store.

The Plateau is awesome. Mount Royal Avenue, closes at night some days, that's fantastic to do.

If St Catherines is closed to car traffic when you go, it's worth seeing as well, not as good as Mount Royal though.

BioDome is interesting. I would take a pass on going up the stadium thing, it's lame, and it's Quebec, never know when it will collapse.

The squirrels in la fontaine park are fun to feed, can be aggressive though

Stuck Here...how could you have found Old Montreal boring? Did you go to Place Jacques-Cartier where all the street performers are entertaining the crowds? Did you notice the beautiful architecture on all the buildings? All the quaint little coffee shops and bistros? Montreal is many things but boring is absolutely not one of them.

+1. I can't imagine being bored taking a walk in Old Montreal. OP, if you're a fan of poutine, make sure you try some at a place taht's known for it. La Banquette and M-Burgr make some mean poutines!

In general Old Montreal is a tourist trap. Nothing wrong with that if you're into that sort of thing.

Some nice buildings for Canada sure, nothing I would go out of my way to see.

I love Montreal but I think it's an injustice to focus on Old Montreal.

Tourist Trap? I totally disagree. Just because they sell some souvenirs here and there and offer bus tours in an area hardly qualifies it as a tourist trap. I dunno about you, but when I am in Old Montreal, I feel like I've gone through a time machine and gone into the past.

I went to Montreal a few years ago (did all the downtown stuff) and I didn't like it. I thought it was way too busy, there was too much going on. I just wasn't a fan. I liked the places that I went, but I prefer Quebec City much more. The traffic is brutal too! Their highway system is ridiculous! I guess you get used to it, but I hated it! However, I know a lot of people love Montreal. Their subway system actually is better than Toronto's system.

You need to talk to more people.

Actually, no I don't. But then again, you are the same person who is "stuck" in nightmarish Milton so I'm not surprised you weren't impressed with the culture and history that Old Montreal has to offer other than a Christmas store
