If that is your whole argument, then please define a minority. You and so many people are out of touch with reality on participation rates for ALL sports or activities because EVERY ONE of them appeals to a minority. The most popular sport, golf, appeals to about 20 to 21% of the population, far below a majority of 51%. Hockey and all other sports are well below that. So by your logic no recreational facility should ever be built with public money. Just sayin'.

By your logic, the town should be building golf courses.

I fully approve more golf courses in Milton. Also a driving range bubble thing.

How about a driving range in the middle of the Velodrome? Genius!

KGC makes a fairly decent point.

Honest question: Does the Sports Arena make money, break even, or get fed our tax dollars?

Fed tax dollars if I've interpretted the operating budget correctly.
http://milton.ca/en/townhall/resources/ ... Budget.pdf
Pg 222.
Recreation is a service provided to the community - translates into municipal-speek for we (meaning we the taxpayer) subsidize operational costs it to keep user fees at competitive levels with other communities. Also why there's a surcharge for out-of-community use of facilities. Miltonians get priority because we pay for it in our taxes. People from outside Milton do not, so need to pay more.
Was actually a bit surprised there wasn't more discussion of the fees around the council table when the comprehensive review was done earlier this year with proposed fees going forward.

When will we start seeing designs for this?
Will the public get to choose? I'm doubting it but would be nice.
Hope it blends in with the area and not some ugly grey monstrosity.

Trust me, once you see the 30ft bronze statue of Mayor Krantz holding a fistful of gold medals, you’ll feel all warm and fuzzy about it.

I can't recall the Champion ever being critical of Milton Council or approved projects. Until today. Very bold Julie Slack. Good for you.

" I call that a mighty expensive white elephant — at least that’s what I think the velodrome will turn out to be.

Furthermore, I predict ‘small expenses’ like an October council-approved payment of $12,532 for consulting services are going to be the norm. I believe this project could balloon into a drain on taxpayer dollars before construction is even completed, let alone the bill we could be stuck with after the big event in 2015."

Congratulations Ms. Slack on representing the voice of the residents like our currently elected officials have failed to.

Thanks Mike C (if I may) for posting that video. Finally something to look at. You will note the players include Kenaidan partnering with Bouygues, the latter being a France-based multi-national company. Interesting as they are working on a 300 million euro Velodrome project in Marseille! - Woop D F'kin do!! Miton tax payers will be sending millions of dollars outside the country in support of this project, I am outraged!!

MP, I would rather have an experienced multinational company designing this than a local inexperienced company. I am not at all surprised to see that. Before you get your knickers in a knot, that consoritium also includes Morrison-Hershfield, and Cannon Design, and Bouygues Buildings Canada. The actual track itself is being designed by an American, Dale Hughes - again not surprising to see an international choice there. His designs are fast, innovative and cost-effective from what I've read.

Freemantrailfamily, I hope you are right. However, I do prefer and will remain the skeptic on this one and predict the true costs will be significantly greater than what has been discussed and hypothesised. I am sorry but there is just something fishy about this whole process and the monies being flushed into the velodoom project.
