This will be discussed at tonights council meeting but giving a heads up there will be two dates that Main Street will be closed temporarily throughout the week. The details are here in this report. http://www.milton.ca/MeetingDocuments/C ... 0final.pdf

Essentially due to changes at CP Rail and costs of overtime work, staff have decided to make these changes to road closures during the week instead of the weekend. With these changes to pay at CPR if we continued on regular plan of having this work done on weekend, it could cost the town over $200,000.00

"These road closures were originally anticipated to take place on the weekend. In December of 2012 CP Rail advised the Town of a new overtime policy that would increase the labour costs incurred by the Town for the track relocations by more than double (or approximately $200,000 based on those labour costs incurred during the 2012 track diversion installations). The Director, Engineering Services, issued a letter in response to this overtime policy that expressed the position of the Town with respect to this policy.

"To accommodate the shifting of the existing two tracks to the western half of the ultimate bridge structure, two road closures are required on Main St East between the east leg of the Milton Mall entrance and a point 10m east of the CPR right of way. These closures will result in Main Street East being closed to traffic from 12:00a.m. to 9:00p.m. on Tuesday July 9, 2013 and from 8:30a.m. to 9:00p.m. on Tuesday July 16, 2013."

These dates and times are subject to change due to weather and/or construction schedules."

Another example of our fine bureaucracy working for the benefit of the tax payer? Sounds like the contract with the constructor is also weak in protecting public money and minimizing extras. Is this what is holding up the rail crossing work on Derry as well. Shame. Shame on our Engineering department for not protecting tax payers money and the public wellfare and convenience. Shame.

An interesting take, given that the decision was made in order to protect taxpayers money. Remember CP Rail owns the tracks, so we are somewhat at their mercy.
