If you follow me on Twitter you'll see that I've been posting pictures of dumping in the green bins of residential waste normally on days when the garbage or recycling have been picked up. I've also talked with Region staff telling them this problem has increased ever since the 3 bag limit was approved. They seem to think that's not the issue bit if you go along LSL from JSP to Bronte St you'll see almost weekly more dumping as well as 4th Line and Thompson south of LSL.

If anyone does witness this type of dumping of garbage they can call 3-1-1 to report it. The more evidence I can provide the region staff that this is an issue in Milton (apparently it's not in Burlington or Oakville) the better chance I have of getting the point across that it needs to be addressed.

I can't imagine a reason it's only a issue in Milton and not Burlington and Oakville. :|

do we call 311 also to report heaps of crap left on the roadside, if not witnessed? We could bombard them with legitimate calls, it's a Halton (not Milton) call centre right.

Yes its a Halton service. If you see garbage dumped on the side of the road anywhere let them know so it can be recorded as an occurence. When they tell me its not happening in other parts of the region, I want to let them know its happening here.

If its witnessed, even better. But there are places in the southern part of Milton that get dumped quite often and thats when I get the phone calls. I just want to make sure by calling 311 its reported and I can have a stronger argument in letting them know its an issue here.

Thanks.

Wouldn’t it make sense to have the dump operate with non-shitty hours so people don’t feel that it’s easier to just chuck their crap all over the place?

It’s got be cheaper than sending crews out to clean up the mess all the time.

I've reported dumping that was witnessed. Provided plate number, description of car, location, date time and never heard anything back. Days later the garbage was still there at LSL & Farmstead. Does the Town really not think this is an issue? They certainly act like it's not.

Maybe if all those over zealous parking by law guys could be redirected to the dumping problem, we may get some results.

It's the Region. Problem 1. Most of them are Burlington and Oakville. How many Regional staff live in Milton to see this, and we only have 3 regional elected reps on a council of 21? I'm sure the Town parks staff have likely seen an uptick in their park garbage pick-ups. I agree with the tag program in principle but you need the enforcement and education to teach people why they're doing this. Not an easy thing to do. I have an easier time getting my 7 year old to understand why he takes reuseable containers in his lunch, why we use the green bin, and the whole concept of using less than many adults. I think more people need to tour the waste management facility, a waste-water treatment plant, and composting facilities to get why we do these things. Part of enforcement, if you can catch people doing it, should be a mandatory tour of all these facilities as part of their education along with a tour of the Green Lane landfill south of London that takes Toronto's garbage.

I wish the city would do a cost benefit analysis. I have no doubt that the illegal dumping is related to bag limits etc. Is the money saved by hauling away less trash enough to cover picking up junk and bags from ditches all over the region? Oh yes, and of course the "investigation" cost of having a guy making 60k a year split open bags and look for envelopes with addresses. Just a thought.

Anyone actually purchased a bag tag?
Has ANY revenue been collected to date from their sale? How & when will we know?
Seems everyone already has secured a way around paying.

There’s no possible way the region is selling any tags.

Leaving on my way to work this morning I noticed almost every house now has garbage bins out for collection (including mine). It’s clearly to get around the bag limit. There was a distinct minority with bins before the tags came in. People aren’t retarded, and if they can save a buck or two buying bins instead of tags, that’s what they will do.

The 100K per year to hire some pencil pusher to manage the difficult task of selling bag tags to nobody is just the tip of the iceberg. There’s 180K households in Halton region. If each one of them bought 1 bin at a cost of $10, that’s a collective 1.8Million dollars taxpayers have had to spend because of this stupid program.

Sadly, I know exactly where this will go. In another year or two, they will simply tighten the rules around bins.

We will never know. The region will NOT report on how many tags are sold and how much the cost of implementing the program has been offset. Just like the region will NEVER report on tickets issued by the red light camera, revenue generated and if it covers the ridiculous $8000 a month maintenance fee.

To do so would be to publicly show their incompetence and they want us to keep paying their salaries.

Hi Prickly Pete

Thanks for the post and concern.

I took care of the two bags you mentioned on Louis St. Laurent Blvd. they were full of compostable materials which could have been picked up during a special pickup in a brown leaf bag.

http://halton.ca/living_in_halton/recycling_waste/

For everyone's information the Town is responsible for maintenance along local roads such as Louis St. Laurent and does contract work on regional roads so there is not a duplication of services in the area and charges the region back for any costs.

If you are unsure of which level of government or agency is responsible for a service call 311 and the staff there will direct your concern to the appropriate people either at the federal, provincial, local, hydro, conservation authority or other agency.

If you know it is a Town service and you are calling after hours or on weekends call the Town's after hours number 905-878-7141 and tell the dispatcher what the concern is and they will dispatch operations staff to deal with it.
