I was reading about it in the thread regarding new A&P.
About police cruisers presence on parking lot in front of the store.
Went one morning to walk with our dog to this direction. It was about 8AM. Spotted one police city cruiser and one police road cruiser idling for 10 minutes in front of the houses. It was no traffic and only my dog and I were walking around. One of the officers almost dropped him self out of the car while looking at me with his top half of the body out from car window. No lights, no radio, they are obviously were killing their time. This is good sign for no crime to be around.
But one thing was bugging me. Why they have to idle their cars in front of private residence of the tax payer. And it was big idling of 16 cylinders and almost 10 litters of engines from two cars.
I don’t know for how long they were parked here in total. I was walking around them for about ten minutes and they left.
On my way back to A&P I meet same cars on the empty parking lot in front of the store.
As I mentioned before some part of this story was already described.
But today the story continued for me in Georgetown. Was taking milk for coffee at new A&P in Georgetown this morning. Guess what? Exactly the same on the empty parking lot in front of the store.
I believe here is practical reason for doing of this by police.
But it is just kind of funny and makes me understand why all this jokes about cops&donuts are always around.

I think you are making an assumption that what appeared to be idling was not in fact intent waiting with purpose.

Perhaps they were waiting for a second unit to arrive, or orders from dispatch. I think we have all been in situations where we are doing are job, and the task at hand is to "hurry up and wait" while some other action beyond our control was occurring. Some of us loiter on forums and post during that time. But when your job is on the road, sometimes you just have to wheel into a parking lot and sit it out.

You do know that police officers have computers in their cruisers and have to do paperwork at some point right?

I like to know they are around our community when they have down time. Better than sitting in a station office.

If you want to get really picky about English.. With Canada being part of the Commonwealth, you should be calling them Police Constables. :)

Boobies are more like street police not car cruising :?:

Why it is always two of them here and again today in Georgetown? One dark blue for roads policing and another is in white color for city cruising. They are always staying like two villagers who meet each other while driving from opposite direction and stopping right in the middle of the road to have a chat. Sharing one computer to do their office work? LOL
While I was keep looking at them for those 10 minutes it was way too obvious they were doing bla-bla-bla. Like waiting for something and just keep talking.
So the question is. If it is going on for special reason or the only reason is - they are not willing to go on for cruising around while on assignment to do so?
I’m still wondering about this joke how lazy cops are eating donuts near by the grocery store while on duty.

How about you go up to them and ask them if to assuage your fears of there lazyness and see how they respond?

I'm 100% positive that is the reason as well, guess I'm just clarifying why kf095 had shown concern about it.

And yes, a common scene, to see police cruisers sitting in parking lots here and there, most often to finish paper work, but I often see them chatting to another officer in between calls.

Tim

The car running isnt just about instant response. If the car isnt running the battery will drain beacuse of all the additional electrical equpiment on board such as the radio, computer, and screen. Its the same reason why you will see the cars running at accident scenes. If the cars were shut off the roof lights would kill the battery. Also with the car off, the in car radio doesnt operate (and I dont mean am/fm radio).

For the police to sit in plazas, schools, and such its about being visible. They could just as easily park behind the school or plaza and not be seen at all by anyone, and not be judged as lazy or not earing their money. By sitting out front the shops are all a little bit safer and would be break-ins are deterred.

Well you reason is the same as my reason because a dead battery is the same as no response

I think police car is really overloaded with devices which are using 12V power.
Perhaps if it is not running - most of equipment will not even functioning.
Their alternators are two times more powerful compare to regular car. One of my cars was an ex -road police cruiser.
So we will forgive them for the idling in front of the houses. Due to the technical issues. LOL.
And I really would like to buy the idea about presence in public.
But, why they do need to be present at two different cars at the distance of few inches from each over at the same parking lot.
For this reason isn’t it more effective to have one car at A&P and another one at Homedepot plaza.
But wait a second, is part of the job for the dark blue road cruiser to be idling on the parking lot. I was almost sure this car is to keep eye on the speeding issue.
From my point of view, if this kind of car is on duty of presence it must be present at the spot just near by curb on Thomson road, where everybody speeding, not at the empty plaza parking lot.
As for asking them about why they are doing some strange things. I’m not sure if they will understand this question from me. I have strong accent and specific exterior plus my dog is kind of spooky mix, I just afraid they will make wrong interpretation about my questions, plus I’m kind of shy person.

Nice job to be paid from our taxes.

But break reason make sense if it is 24 hours long shift.

They work 12hrs shifts, and could be working on apper work from a call they were both on. With Halton Cops riding single and not paired in a car, up two cars go to significant calls. I also doubt cars a speeding a few meters away. Most people arent stupid enough to speed right in front of the police.
