Was a big fan of Fitness Etc. as well. Unfortunately moved to the east end and go to LA now (just joined, value the convenience). So far I don't like it nearly as much and the pricing is about the same. I guess they have a pool, but I probably won't use that much. Hex plates for the free weights are super annoying.

fitness etc is def older and not as nice as the other two but I for one go to the gym to actually work out so none of this bothers me. It is much cheaper and far more convenient if you are in the west end of town. It is nowhere near as busy as GL and LA, and is always clean and organized. The staff usually walks around every hour or so and puts back all the weights where they should be. I have never seen that happen at GL or LA.

is the lighting any better at LA now? I tried a free trial a few years ago and found it pretty dark in there in the evenings. GL is always nice and bright inside, day or night.

Is LA dark inside? I've never noticed that.

If it is, it's a good thing overall as the dimmer lights create shadows on your body to make you look more ripped when you're mirin, brah.

Zyzz.

Nah way! Bright lights make the oil you slather yourself in shimmer for the gun show. If you use the mirrors right, gym bunnies will flock to you like moths to a light

I dunno. The LA Fitness location was ripe for the picking and the Milton location decided they would rather have a competitor move in.

Yeah but the reason Target wanted those Zellers leases was for the really cheap rent
Milton Mall would probably cost less than Maple location
We shall see (its just speculation right now)

It would be nice to go work out while my shoes are in for repair.

I can't believe goodlife chose to stay in their dungeon $*it hole of a gym when the old premier facility was ripe for the pickin.

GL lost my business when years ago, despite pleas from the members they decided not to renovate their 70's themed gym UNTIL premier started construction on the new building.

too little too late.

Yaay thanks for giving me an opportunity to bitch about the Steeles GL. I was really pissed as well when they had the opportunity to jump to a much newer, bigger facility and did nothing. They had better jump on that Target location or I will be pisssssssed!!
The big prob with the Steeles location is that it's an old freaking office with low ceilings and bad circulation. It gets HOT and muggy in the summer, and stinks pretty much all the time. But on warm days I've actually felt like I was getting bitch slapped with stank when I walked in. Being on one of the stairmasters, your head isn't far from the ceiling and it can get claustrophobic sometimes. And since I'm bitching, I have to mention what it's like to be a woman in the weight area. The dudes all look at you like they've either never seen a woman lift weights, or like they've just busted out of prison after doing 10-15. But if ABS is a man then not to worry. If you think you might be into fitness classes then GL is your best bet because of the Les Mills programs and everything else they've got going on. Like everyone else is saying though, avoid the 5:30 rush. You'll hate life in general if you attempt this, from the crappy parking to the crowded change rooms, the inability to get on a weight machine, or to squeeze into a class unless you want to squish in like a sardine and then take away other people's room to exercise.
Ok I'm done, thanks for listening to me bitch.

Does anyone know when that GoodLife opened in Milton? I know it's been there since at least 1999 when I used to live in Toronto and passed by it en route to U of G. It is a very ghetto gym, but you just get used to all the weights, the bars and the machines that you don't want to switch.

I've recently fell in love with those Stairmaster machines because I've embraced cardio after reading the book Spark by John Ratey. It's the best cardio machine there since you're not sitting, and are using more muscles while fighting gravity. I say avoid Stairmaster #3 since it's directly below the fluorescent lighting. I'm shooting for 100 floors in 20min, and got 97 floors at my last try. 8)

I don't think I'll leave GL unless they do something that I really dislike. They've upgraded lots of stuff in recent years. They even got a little apparatus to work the tibialis muscles.

The one thing I did like about GL was how the machines were laid out. If you weren't a serious weight lifter, all you really needed to do was start at one end and work your way down to the other, and you pretty much got a well rounded workout.

That and the tanning was sick. I would never drive to a tanning place because I really don't care, but just hoping in there for 10 minutes after a work out was sweet. I don't understand why that isn't standard at all gyms. It's an easy $15 bucks extra in their pocket for operating an oversized light bulb. Most people probably never use it, just like their memberships.
