I have visited a couple of centres already but besides quick tours and talks with the supervisors I'm looking for your views on the following daycares:
- Buliding Blocks on Bronte
- Peekaboo on Derry
- Montessori School of Milton
- Montessori Country School

Any thoughts? Do you have any other suggestions?

Cheers!

Have a parent look after your child. Why sub contract out the most important job you will ever have? As good as the various centres, schools etc. are, they don't love your child. If you can make it work, try to have a parent do it.

I think Daycare is great, even if it's only part-time. Children learn to interact with other students. In speaking with some relatives and friends who are teachers at the kindergarten-grade3 level, they can really tell the difference in the kids that went to daycare vs. stayed home with parents/grandparents. Daycare kids are ahead in social development.

It's not always about money/attention. Sometimes professionals are better at something than we as people/parents are.

There is a new centre in Milton called Kids & Company at the corner of Ont. St/Steeles in the Tim's/Service Canada building opening on Monday http://milton.kidsandcompany.com/

Most of the info you need to register is available online https://kidsandcompany.com/ca

The Milton location has spots open to the public.
Good luck in your search!

Professional trained ECE environment is always better that home based daycare when it comes to learning and social interaction. Some daycare providers will sit your kid down in front of a tv all day long. Some, not all.

A professional ECE is not always better. Some of the centers in Milton aren't that great (I personally know people that have worked in a few). Learning and social interaction can be just as good if not better due to the fact that a Home Daycare provider can only have a maximum of 5 kids including their own according to the new bill passed by the government. Like Pete said, do your research and your gut will tell you when you've found the right home provider. And I appreciate that you specified that "not all" providers use TV as a method to keep the children busy. I incorporate learning into my program as well as play based interaction and I am NOT ECE certified, I just love my job.

Again, there are many reputable providers in Milton, it's up to the parent to go with your gut and to do the research. Due to the new bill being passed rates will be going up all over the place including daycare centers.

Why would a bill proposing to regulate home based day cares have any effect on centre daycares?
For that matter assuming a home day care is already self regulating itself there really should be no net increase in fees since any daycare in operation before the 1993 loophole were running just fine

(To be fair there ARE some very good home based ones, but I am skeptical they are in the majority... it is the overcrowded lack of stimulus places that would be punished)

If a home based day care is not overcrowding I fail to see where rates could possibly go up (unless just an excuse for personal greed)

Quote:
Ontario is tightening provincial rules governing unregulated daycare businesses and throwing the book at those that flout the law.
Under the Child Care Modernization Act, the province would be able to immediately close a daycare where children are at risk.
In addition, the act would allow ministry officials to levy penalties of up to $100,000 per infraction against caregivers running illegal daycares.
Maximum fines would rise from $2,000 to $250,000 under the proposed act.
If the legislation is enacted, ministry officials would no longer have to go to court to issue fines or shutter an illegal daycare.

The proposed legislation would also take away the financial incentive of remaining unregulated. Under the act, anyone providing care for more than five children under age 10 — including their own children — would require a licence.

Unregulated caregivers would be further restricted by being able to care for only two children under age 2, as is currently the law for regulated home daycares.

The new legislation, which runs to more than 100 pages, also clarifies many “gray areas” in the current rules around what type of care has to be licensed.

Provisions in the act would also give the education ministry more authority to share child care information with other ministries and government authorities, such as Children’s Aid and public health.

Rates will go up because there are less spots available for kids. It's that simple.

Exactly. There will be a huge demand for infant spaces given providers now have to follow the "2 under 2 rule". Daycare centers know this, you don't think their not going to try to take advantage of it? come on. They aren't in the business to keep rates affordable for parents, their in it to make money where they can.

Seriously?
So the only argument you really have against the bill is the fact they actually will enforce student to teacher ratios? (Which have been in place for years at daycare centres?)

I would be a tad more concerned with parents willing to support a daycare that had too many infants enrolled even if it means a modest increase in fees
It's not like we even have a shortage of spots now

BTW and quite seriously noone will be jacking up rates despite the FUD being pushed by unlicensed daycares; doing so would simply make nanny services more attractive to families. There is a supply & demand factor involved for daycare spots sure but at certain price points people would explore alternate means (even family babysitters or 1 parent incomes)
No Daycare (home or centre) is going to get rich off this lol

The other side of that sword is enforcement (from fines to shutting a place down) is vastly improved in the new bill

Can some continue to operate illegally? Sure
Until a parent complains

Here's a hint though; the places that don't treat children like cattle tend not to get the parents complaining
Just sayin
