Here are the only things I found interesting at the Milton Home show in April 2007.







Now trying to do some research on the net and this is what I am finding.

So with the attic vents, they just take out the hot air in the attic by solar power, so in essence to cool one of the hottest part of the house.

With the inflector panels, winter use, allows the sun to come into the home to warm, while blocking the cold air/convection. and in the sumer with the panel inverted, it will block the suns rays to keep the house cool.

So "IF" both of these things are true and with a little investment, I should be saving some dough!

Guess we'll have to see.

the solar attic vents look interesting....i hope they actually work. how much do they cost?

Thats the kicker. The place mentioned above had a price of $699+GST installed. I'm looking around to see what else is out there and if it is something that I can do

True. I found that out the first winter when I moved in...found a cool breeze in the basement and traced it to the front corner by the garage. I fixed it by putting spray foam and sealing the cracks...then I looked for more cracks and sprayed them too. Later on when I had Mattamy fix the insulation in the garage, they cut out some dry wall and I thought it was funny to see spray foam coming from the basement. Put two and two together and no wonder there was cold air coming down.

To make a long story short. Another Mattamy guy confirmed what I already knew. He said where the headers are in the basement (foundation meets the wood for the 1st floor walls) you will get a lot of air leakage.

What I will be doing to really fix this problem is to spray foam all the headers myself, or hiring an insulating company to do it for me.

If you do end up getting the inflectors or something similar, would really like to hear your review after a couple months on them!

I have a one of the guys coming to give me a quote next week, so I'll know then.

If I approximate a 4' X 5' section for a window should cost ~$400 bucks

I'll let you know if I get better pricing.

Well, I got one of the Solar Stars installed today. The other neighbours around me seem interested as well, but I am going to be the guinea pig.

So if I understand it correctly, I will pay off this Solar Star system over the course of 3 years.

The best time to install it is now, since the payback starts when the temperature is rising.

With the windows closed today, the temperature on the main floor was +24deg C

As the technician said, the longest time was to get the ladder off the truck and place it on the roof, than it was to install the unit.

I also did some checking on the net and you have to remember that most of the items you see are very small in size. This unit is much bigger.

I'll let you all know how it goes.

PS. Sorry no pictures this time of the install...I only make it a habbit to go up on the roof to put up christmas lights!

I took a couple of pictures from the outside from the backing street and what it looks like on the inside.

Tomorrow I'll be putting in a digital thermostat that has a long lead so I can measure the too areas...attic and top floor.
