I'm thinking about purchasing one of the following garage door openers for my new home:

http://www.sears.ca/product/craftsman-m ... 7234-18401

Do most installers prefer to provide their own materials? Or are they ok to install items the customer provides? Approximately how much would installation of two of these openers run?

Thank you.

Home Depot has a better model on sale for $179. https://www.homedepot.ca/en/home/p.12-h ... 03307.html

I installed two of my own, with no prior experience. Took about 1 1/2.

Thx for the heads up!
I haven't used Chamberlain products before, how are they compared to Craftsman products?

They should be comparable since Chamberlain manufactures the Craftsman openers.

Chamberlain, Crafstman and Liftmaster are all pretty much identical on the inside, they just wear different clothes.
As an installer, I typically charge $20 more for a customer supplied unit, primarily because there is more work involved. The Liftmaster "professional" series come with a solid, pre assembled rail that takes 30 seconds to attach, vs the consumer versions which have a less solid 5 piece rail, which you have to install the chain/ belt assembly. Takes about 10-15 mins longer. Most installers will not charge you for the "extras" if needed, such as wood to install to the header, punch angle to attach to the ceiling, staples etc. If you get a place like Canadian Tire to install it, than you can expect to pay for these "extras" on top of the installation cost.

I just did my own yesterday - replacement for my existing one which had become unreliable.

If you use the garage as a main point of entry to the home, IE frequent use, get a higher HP unit. Also if you have a double door versus single, a higher HP will help so you don't have a premature failure.

MY 3/4 HP unit lasted 9 years and I only replaced it because the logic board went on it.

I got the 1.25 HP with battery back up, wifi, etc from Home depot. It's a little more ($338) but I had $250 in giftcards there so I splurged.

Check out garage door openers that work with MyQ (Liftmaster does and I believe chamberlain because they're the same company).
It sounds at first like a frivolous little gadget to have wifi enabled garage doors but now I have no idea how I ever lived without it.

Just don't buy this:
https://www.homedepot.ca/en/home/p.1000663927.html

I wanted the wifi functionality for my Garage Door. Ended up getting it for $89 from Home Depot because it was priced wrong on the shelf a couple weeks ago. I was all excited about getting a great deal until I discovered that this product is a steaming pile of s***.

What was wrong with it? Ours is Liftmaster (but probably exactly the same thing) and it works amazing... Have had it for a few months and never even a glitch.

That's an add on versus a system made for it. The one I have is built right into the opener versus an add on. I don't think the add ins work as well

I ended up buying the one that was recommended above:

https://www.homedepot.ca/en/home/p.12-h ... 03307.html

Reg $299 and got it for $179 with all the wifi equipment included.
Now I can't wait to get it installed in March :)

Excellent buy. You won't be disappointed. I use the same gateway and Lift master app. It's fantastic. I set alerts so I know when my door is left open or if it opens at an odd time. Also great if someone needs to get into my house when I'm not home, I can open and close it remotely.
