I went to the town for a permit prior to building my pergola about 5 years ago. I submitted drawings and paid $60 for the permit, took about two weeks from what I can remember for them to get back to me that a permit was not required. They refunded my fee and told me to build at my own discretion

Great thanks for the first hand experience and input Darrell & Taralyn.
Do you have any photos to post and share?

Looks good, any other photos of how it connects to the house? I can only see one of the braces appears to be against the wall.

Also, are the posts set in the ground with concrete footings like a fence post would be? (behind the brick surrounds)

As a follow up to this thread, I called the Town yesterday, and was told that since the structure would be attached to the house, it would require a permit.

As there is no roof and therefore no snow load (open wood beams/joists only), there are no set back restrictions from the property line.

With that information, I will be putting together some plans and completing the permit application form to take in to review with them before proceeding.

Thanks, I did and do plan on giving the town a call. I just figured posting to this community forum would provide some experience from others who have done similar.
Apparently I was wrong and posting here only gets me responses from unhelpful and unfriendly vampires.

Let's see how many more people can tell me to call the town. It's not like I was going to go pick up a permit from the local Home Depot.

If we can't ask these sorts of questions here I am uncertain what this forum is for besides everyone having a bitch session over planned road closures and traffic light installations that they have minimal control over.

Thanks.

I hear you. You post here looking for opinions and feedback and all you get is attacked and ridiculed. Been there.
