My pick is Louie's Subs on the Southeast corner of Steeles and Ontario St. You can sit in or take out, and it's got that old-fashioned, hospitable burger joint charm to it. They do subs, burgers, souvlaki dinners, and all-day breakfast, and they do it all nice and mean.

In general, based on personal experience, I find that the large majority of eateries in town are below average, and my opinion is based on quality of food and service, service being more of a sore point.

I have agree on the service issue - we've had a string of lousy experiences lately, with the exception of Troy's, which is always great. At that Irish place in the Food Port plaza we waited 20 minutes after we were seated for someone to even awknowledge our existence, and despite asking several times if someone could take our order no one seemed to know who was supposed to be serving us. We gave up and left.

As far as takeout, if I had to choose a place in town I'd go with Wings Up. They're overpriced, and their service often leaves something to be desired, but I love those wings.

It's Matt's Rib House good? We've never tried it, and with the cost of ribs, I don't want to spend the cash without some assurance it'll be worth the money.

I just wish they were all consistently good! Lido is probably my first choice, although we used to get it from Chinese Food and Donut (what a name, eh?) until they became TOO inconsistent with quality.

Pizza - Giovanni's has the most amazing wings (they're HUGE) but their pizza is so-so. I personally object to having 3-4" of exposed crust before hitting topping. Pizza Hut - delivery or pick up for sure, but they have the WORST customer service I've ever experienced. Ginos is "ok", but I don't like their staff (very rude woman who answers the phone during the week). Lately we've been ordering from 2-4-1 pizza on Ontario across from Food Basics, because we can always count on their consistency and quality.

Casey's was utterly awful when they first opened their doors here, but we took a chance before a movie last week and went in for dinner - WOW. Talk about a 100% improvement! Definitely back in our good books. Kelsey's is another fave of ours. Don't know about Casey's takeout, but Kelsey's rocks.

For ice cream, hit Three Tease on Main at Ontario (beside Mr. Sub) for excellent ice cream at really good prices. Haven't tried their desserts otherwise, but they look great. I also love Cafe Deda at Trudeau/Derry for their luscious desserts. Portobellos right beside them is good too.

Hope that helps!

Oh, they've gotten better? We went about a week and a half after they opened, and the food was just awful. Maybe we'll try it again.

If you like Japanese...Sushi-ya Japan is excellent! Always fresh and a good variety of sushi and hot food.

As for pizza...Giovanni's is always good.

Absolutely! In fact, we had such a bad experience when they first opened that I wrote the manager about it. He (I think his name is Jamie) was appreciative for the feedback, although it was definitely negative, and said he was taking pains to retrain and make other improvements. He sent me an incentive to try again as well, so when we did - after quite a bit of time I might add - we were stunned at the turnaround.

I'm not so much hard to please as set in my expectations of quality (haha)

Anyway, yeah, definitely go back for another try. We went during the week - not sure if a weekend would make a difference. Would be interested in hearing your experience though, if you do try again.

We order take out from The Grand Chalet, not exactly cheap, but you get what you pay for in quality and quantity.

We also like Giovanni's for pizza, so far Topppers has been a HUGE disapointment.

The family meal deal is a great bang for your buck from Swiss Chalet.

Chinese - Gold City

What has been wrong with Toppers Pizza? We love it were I work and had Pizza Fridays all through tax season!

We had the same experience at the Casey's when it was fairly new. We took another couple out to dinner for his birthday, and everything went wrong!

My meal and my friends came out earlier (we both got fish and chips), and the guys insisted on us starting. We continued eating and the fish was awful. The batter was gooey cause it wasn't cooked! About 15 mins later, the birthday guy's meal came out, which was ok, but my husbands still hadn't arrived. Finally it came ANOTHER 10 mins later and we were done eating what we could, cause it was so gross, we left over half of it, and my husbands meal was so small it looked like a kids meal. It seemed like they forgot to make his (thats what the honest waiter said), and they probably just "halved" someone elses to feed him.

We then had to wait for like 45 mins to have the manager come (the waiter said he would come visit because of all the mistakes). In the end, I spoke to Jamie and told him that this birthday dinenr was ruined, and this is our first time there. In the end, and a bit of arguing, I received the meal for free (it was about $100), and all I had to pay for was the birthday guys 2 beers (and the tip for the waiter who did everything he could).

I have to give him credit for giving the meal for free, and I told him I'd be back and not judge him solely on that meal.

We did go back a week or so ago and it was great!

Great food, service, and everything!

They've certainly done something to improve (must be all the complaints...LOL).

Laurie

Ordered delivery from there twice, 1st time it took them well over an hour and we litterly live 30 seconds away (we are right by the Galaxy). When we finally phoned looking for our pizza they said they had gone to our old address (don't know how they even got it, we gave them our current address over the phone and we've been here since 2004). Anyway pizza was cold and they didn't even offer it for free much less a discount after we had it wait so long. Second time we ordered, we ordered a meat lovers....well there was barely any meat on it.
Just haven't been impressed.

As for Casey's glad to see it is improving, been there once and was not at all impressed with my food, will try it again though.
