We're in a Springridge semi, it's a few years old but we've only been in since January. We want to finish/partially finish the basement, specifically we want to turn one section into a home theatre room sooner rather than later, then finish the rest over time.

We'd like to do a lot of the work ourselves to save money, (having emigrated to Canada and bought a house, 2 cars and furniture all within 8 months doesn't leave a ton of spare cash!) but we've never done anything like this before. Is there anyone who could help us with the design, getting permits, etc. and some of the trickier tasks (we think we can handle the framing, running cables through (but not connecting them), but we want to have a suspended ceiling with acoustic tiles....), that won't cost an arm and a leg? A lot of the people I've seen advertising on here will finish it completely, we just want a little guidance and advice.

If you are looking to put a home theatre in the basement, I'd be more than happy to assist with design and setup.

Thanks. We're reasonably OK with cabling, speaker set up, projector installation etc. (or that's what my husband tells me, he's been an enthusiast for years :D ), it's more the actual making walls and ceiling things that are our stumbling blocks at the moment!

As long as you don't buy your wiring from Futureshop or fall for the snake-oil usually posed by a well known company that starts with M and ends with STER :)

Heck no! :D I believe our last cables came from a place in California...and cables from M**STER range are not welcome in our house! We're not planning to get any of our kit from Futureshop - they're overpriced and don't carry the "good" stuff. We've had Mission and Kef speakers in the past, I think we're planning to stick with Kef, but since the OH changes his mind pretty frequently I don't think it will be fully decided until we've bought the things!
