Everyday when I drive through hawthorne village I see numerous women pushing strollers walking on the road when there is a perfectly good sidewalk. I even saw one walking opposite traffic direction who I didnt see until right after I turned the corner. Any ideas why this is? Does this mean I dont have to shovel my sidewalk this winter?

Well...

The ones who were walking opposite to the traffic were on the correct side of the street, or at least that is what we teach children, if you have to walk on the road/shoulder walk against traffic not with it. Apparently humans are better at seeing faces then asses.

Now why they are walking on the road, according to the forums the road is better then the sidewalk for the stroller. I think they are silly/nuts, but I think a good reminder to everyone to drive safe in the neighborhood, because your not going more then 50 km/h are you?

Now as for the title, I'm pretty sure streetwalkers are prostitutes...

We recently took our son out for a walk last week for the first time (the weather was a little warmer then).

We did go on the sidewalk. But maybe some prefer the road (safety aside) over the sidewalk because of the sidewalk grooves?. When the stroller's on the sidewalk, it shakes everytime we walk over the sidewalk grooves. And our stroller is really new/modern. The baby doesn't seem to mind the groove bumps though.

If you wanna walk on the road, fine, but I think you should lose your pedestrian right-of-way if you do. Not trying to be mean, just honest.

I am sure it's because of the joints in the sidewalk (as well as the sidewalk is too narrow for two people to walk side by side). Problem would have been solved had the bike paths been installed.

In Europe apparently, they use recycled rubber tires for sidewalks and it eliminates that bump at the joint of each sidewalk slab. I heard on Breakfast Television a while ago that it may be coming to Canada soon. I think it's a great idea.

I think there is always 2 problems in outdoor construction in Canada (both relate in the end to cost,)

the second and least obvious is scale, things are just farther apart so you need more of what ever you are building with. Concrete is just cheaaaaap

The first is winter.... we have such huge variation in temperatures that stuff breaks and heaves, so I wonder how that rubber would hold up.

You see it often used in children's play structures, but they lay it down like a tile, so it can be adjusted, but it has ridgey bumps.

Actually, they don't lay it down like tiles - at least not all companies. I have checked out one that can do it as a poured filler (similar to ashphalt) for the school playground. It is expensive, but aparently can flex and does not crack with the temperature changes.
I would think that since you would be recycling the tires, the cost would be better for someone doing sidewalks vs. ashphalt or concrete and would be preferable to keep the tires out of landfills.

not sure, could be the processing cost for those tires is pretty high, or just a supply and demand, not enough people want it so niche markets pay more.

Majority of mothers walking on the road with their strollers are doing it because of the sidewalk bumps. These bumps are a non-issue for those with higher quality strollers.

Some people also jog with their strollers on the road because running on the road is better on your joints than on a concrete sidewalk.

While I have always used the sidewalk with my stroller; it also has hazards too... cars blocking the sidewalk; people running stop signs; people not looking when backing out of their driveways, etc.

As long as both pedestrians and motorists use caution; we can continue to have a safe neighbourhood.
