Mattamy did a swap for all that land?

Maybe we should consider re-naming Milton to Mattamy.

The land was useless for Mattamy... they gambled that they could develop it and it didn't work out. Now they took land that was worthless to them, and swapped it for land right by the GO station that I would assume will have a high rise condo on it in the future.

What is that little piece of land between the campus and Derry zoned for?

The land is not in the Milton Urban Envelope and there is rural / agricultural zoning on all of the land.

Hi everyone
Thanks for the posts, sorry for the delay have been in meetings all day.

To answer some of the questions above.

Yes it's true not an April Fools joke.

The Town's Economic Development advisory Committee sub committee chaired by George Takaki an active Chamber member has been working on a post-secondary proposal since 1999 and last year after the Town obtained the 5 acres of land on Main Street from the Royal Bank the Town has put on an active campaign to attract a college or university to Milton.

With the co-operation of Mattamy who is now swapping their 150 acres of land in the centre of the circle highlighted in the announcement Laurier University has signed an agreement with the Town to investigate the site in conjunction with the Provincial ministries involved. All the institutions told the Town that 5 acres was too small and they would be interested in the Town if there was a larger parcel available which after much negotiations has come about.

There still is a number of planning ,servicing and provincial funding issues that have to be resolved first but you will be seeing this area which included two other property owners for a total of 400 acres on the west side of Tremaine Road which could become part of the Phase 3 Boyne Survey Secondary Plan which should be starting public meetings later this year for the third 40,000 resident neighbourhood which should start construction about the year 2011 (check the hdsb.ca web site for school boundaries for the extent of new home applications).

No the Mattamy lands are not useless as the lands fronting onto Tremaine Road south of the first farm at Derry Road are in the Provincial Places to Grow Act for future urban areas which the Region of Halton MUST amend its Official Plan by June 2009 to conform. At todays density targets laid down by the Province 400 acres equals about 2500 net homes after roads, parks and other public uses are taken out or about 10,000 people.

The idea for an education village is to prevent the problems that Oshawa and other communities have with large institutions residential needs overflowing into existing neighbourhoods. Planning staff has been instructed to have a planning charette similar to the North Oakville Plan (check oakville.ca for details) to come up with the best plan for the university and adjacent lands which include three lots.

By way of comparison the Oakville Sheridan Campus is only 50 acres in size and Mc Master University in Hamilton only covers about 100 acres.

The Town is pushing the Region and Province to accelerate plans for the Tremaine Road interchange with Highway #401 which will be a direct link to the campus as well as the the west end of Louis St. Laurent Blvd which could be the front entrance to the campus which the Town is also accelerating to take some of the pressure off Derry Road.

There will be more coverage in the next few days so will be hearing much more about the project.

Colin Best
Local & Regional Councillor
Co-Chair of MEDAC along with Councillor Scherer

I believe WLU has a great reputation as a business school. .I will be living at HVE soon and would welcome this for sure. Hope it happens.

Lauriers Business school is pretty impressive. I wouldn't be surprised if they considered having a satellite MBA program in Milton like the one they currently have in Toronto. There are a good number of students from the GTA that currently commute for p/t classes to the Waterloo campus, myself included. I like to think that we played a role in their decision to court Milton :D

Great news re: the campus, but I am more excited to see what Mattamy can do with the Main St. lands. That's a prime location, and their commercial division has proven that they can build in context with the surrounding community (unlike First Pro, SmartCentres, Rio-Can, etc.). It would be nice to see them buy the Rona site as well so we can have an almost-continuous stretch of 'Main Street-type' development from the east to downtown.

Wow, with WLU potentially moving a few minutes drive away, I've pretty much lost all my excuses for not doing my MBA! I guess I'd better stay tuned and maybe go out and buy a GMAT book soon....

Glad the plan is a ways off still. Gives me time to sell this home and move. Am I the only one that thinks having a university campus so close would suck? Am I the only one who hoped that parcel at Tremaine wouldn't be developed at all?

I thought everything west of Tremaine was protected and couldn't be developed, that's what Mattamy told me when I bought... that said, I personally think a university campus will be great, especially if they offer lots of night school. I'm already done the MBA, but I'd probably be tempted to either do a PHD or a masters of science if I'd be biking to school...

I have to disagree, the houses on Mississauga Road right next to UofT went sky rocket in price. The only reason I can see why the price of homes will drop if there are not enough student housing on campus, but by the looks of it that is covered.

I welcome this, seems to work well at UTM. Wouldn't want anything commercial or residential or industrial for that land though....a university is considered institutional, is that correct?

Are basement apartments legal in Miltom? 8)
Bad news, for sure.
1. My impression was it was protected lads West of Tremaine. Looks like nobody really cares about this part of environment which is recognized as unique part of the biosphere. It is not going to survive if they going to surround it with asphalt fields.
2. Few weeks ago it was in the news about multiple issues with university students living in Oshawa or Ajax residential areas. Bad accommodation planning was to blame on. If I’m not mistaken Milton is in the middle of another education accommodation disaster right now.
Why not to give up some lands designated for industrial utopia zones? West of James Snow, for example. They are closer to 401 and Go Train. This makes perfect sense for people who will need to commute from East, South or even West. If they dump this university institution in the middle of nowhere which HVE is right now without connecting of Tremaine to 401 first is it is going to be obviously stupid.

If anyone thought that west of Tremaine would be farm land forever they were dreaming. That being said, and accepting that the land would be used for SOMETHING, I can't think of anything better to go in, really. What's better? a mall? another 1500 houses? a dump? Canada's wonderland? I mean, come on! This is great news.

What's better is that it will take years to get approved and built, around the time I'll be looking to sell and this WILL increase property values.
