Thought I would place a review of my Power Pipe install on the www.homedepot.ca website.

If the link works, check it out @ http://www.homedepot.ca/webapp/wcs/stor ... PartNumber

I also uploaded some pictures there...have yet to do it here!

Tim.

Hey Tim,

Did you also connect the diswasher drain pipe to the powerpipe?
I am thinking of doing this but my dishwasher drain pipe is in an other part of the basement.

Also what kind of wrap did you use to insulate the powerpipe?

Thanks,
Conrad

No, I didn't worry about the dishwasher pipe or the washing machine pipes. From what I understand, you recoup the most when there is a constant flow ie people taking showers.

What I did do was run my ensuite shower & tub water only to the waste water pipe of the main floor and 2nd floor waste stack. So I am getting the most out of the single power pipe.

What Power Pipe and or the other manufacturers do is sell two power pipes to install on 2 stacks and daisy chain the cold water. I found this lame and more costly, so I replumbed.

And according to the city of Milton building people, I did not need a permit to do any plumbing work in the basement. This is not the case if I am ripping the foundation out to add a basement bathroom.

Take a look at my website below and you can see some pictures. Although I did not have a chance to put quotes in the power pipe install....yet.

Almost forgot.

I used the R=4 Reflectix spiral pipe wrap that has foil on both sides.

Power Pipe says it is a good idea if the "basement" is cooler.

I said it is a good idea...Maximize on heat retention in the pipe. I also used this product to wrap my pipe coming from the ensuite shower.

I'd love to see after the fact the difference in gas usage from the same time last year once you have been using it for a while. Please come back and post the longer term $$$ effect once you have a clear idea.

Thanks

One note: I installed my Power-Pipe in Mid Feb, so the March bill will only reflect half the period.

Image
Looks like the gas usage went down from 10.4 to 9.0 a potential savings of 1.4 cubic meters

Image
For this full month gas usage went up from 6.5 to 6.8 cubic meters. The only difference I see is that they used a 28 day billing cycle last year and this year had 30 billing days (IE 2 extra)

I'll keep you posted on how it goes.

On a side note, they dropped my equal billing payment!!! 8)

Your comparison to last year also needs to include the average temperature...

March '07 Average Temp: -8 Daily Usage 10.4
March '08 Average Temp: -5 Daily Usage 9.0
Warmer this year = Less Gas Used

April '07 Average Temp: +2 Daily Usage: 6.5
April '08 Average Temp: -1 Daily Usage: 6.8
Colder this year = More Gas Used

Overall, it doesn't look like there is much difference at all compared to last year (assuming that your hot water usage patterns haven't changed since last year and you haven't adjusted your thermostat program).

Here is this months bill

Image

Looks like I have dropped from 4.9 (last year) to 3.2 (this year). Big difference is the temperature for this month on average is 3 degrees higher than last year.

May 1st to June 3, 2008 Bill

June '07 Average Temp: 15 Daily Usage 1.3
June '08 Average Temp: 12 Daily Usage 1.8

Looks like gas consumption increased by 0.5 possibly due to lower temperatures this year.

I've had it for only a short time, so would want to base my conclusion on a full years worth of data.

I think this system would work great with a tankless water heater and I may head in that direction in the future.

All I have to say is the way my daughters are using hot water, I believe it is now coming in handy.

In the future we may see some incentive programs coming from Union Gas to have the system installed.

With the "Energuide" program you do get ~$100 or more on a grant or rebate for power pipe installs, so that will drop the price down some.

I still need to check if I have any real savings from it. The two things I did notice IMMEDIATELY after the PP was put in was, one, the shower was a lot hotter (I had a lot of problems before with the shower water not being warm enough, or intermittent). The second is that it basically put an end to cold tap water in the house. All I get now is cool water at best.

Hi Paul,

How about at your kitchen sink? If they plumbed it correctly, your cold water should connect to two places.

1. direct to powerpipe
2. direct to kitchen sink

I modified this a bit to have my cold water bypass a water filter (in the future this would be a water softener) and go direct to my two outside hose bibs.

Here is my latest data

June 31st to July 3, 2008 Bill

July '07 Average Temp: 17 Daily Usage 1.0
July '08 Average Temp: 17 Daily Usage 0.9
Used 26.813 cubic metres.

Wow, gas usage went down by 0.1 cubic metres.

Nope. I can't get cold water from the kitchen sink either, nor from any of my other bathrooms.
