Wow,

I'm glad I posted my question on this blog. This is going to end up saving us a lot of money. As a first time parent to be....you tend to think that you need everything. However, I'm quickly figuring out what the essentials are.

Thank you Everyone.

My wife and I have a 5 month old so this is all pretty familiar.
Change table: Count us on the Ikea dresser category. We got a changing pad that weve attached to the top of it.

Diapers: Well for this I can't give any opinions on the Genies. We use cloth diapers as since my wife has a latex allergy we didn't want to risk my son would either. BEyond the health concerns, it is far easier than I expected and though their was a higher initial cost the cost savings on diapers has saved me considerably already.

Probably the most important things to get are a good stroller and car seat/s.
I am a stroller junkie and have had at least nine over the years.

Actually now I am in to big strollers so I don't know all the single ones that are out there. I currently "drive" a six seat mini bus. :)

For strollers we have a Phil & Teds sport. Amazing stroller. It was down to that or a bugaboo and the P&T's is much more versatile.

visit www.babywearboutique.com and speak with Steph, who owns it. I would pick up a wrap or a sling...especially a sling if you plan on breastfeeding. The wrap is amazing, I wear my son all of the time, it's the only thing that lets me get things done...as well as have a hand for each of my other little ones.

To those with 4 kids...what are your "mix" :) I have 4 boys.....ugh!!! They drive me nuts.

Jessica :)

My favorite thing was the baby carrier made by baby bjorn, my daughter lived in it. I would clean my whole house vacuum, do laundry prep food for dinner. (She did not like the swing)
If you think you would like a baby carrier go to Babies r us or Super safety store with your child. Try them all on. Pick one that you and your child are comfortable in, also make sure that is easy to get child in/out of specifically when sleeping.

I also enjoyed the bassinet, mind you it is shortly lived...

We used the jolly jumper a lot, this was another favorite of my daughters, she could have stayed in there for hours, I liked the one you can hang from any door frame it had a snack tray on it. This was great for me I would hang it in master ensuit while getting ready in the morning.

Another tip is 2 excersaucers one upstairs one down stairs, these can be found cheap at garage sales and reused stores, most toys come off and can be washed in dishwasher, these toys are pricey and very short lived they are also balky to store for next child. My daughter would get bored of the toys so every few months I would rotate them and trade them in for new ones at the reused store.

You may want to go to the Fisher Price Mattel outlet store at Mavis and Brittannia in Mississauga this place has great sales, at Christmas the lines are huge if you bring a stroller there is a side entrance for stroller only (avoid the lines).

I could see this post going on for ever, everyone loves to give advise for babies... You'll be an expert before you give birth

notice how many pregnant ladies around here?? and those r the ones already showing..I imagine there r few that r not showing like i am ...i hope not too many r due in january! i want a room of my own and i dont want the epidural guy to be too busy!

That's funny! Just do what I did beg and plead. They'll be sure to give it to you. I find that if you are handling your labour okay they try not to give it to you. The epidural slows down the process.

Wow four boys. I could not imagine what it would be like with four boys. I have two boys and two girls and let me tell you boys are something else. I can certainly relate.

Reena,

Looks like you've got lots of good advice on here, but thought i'd throw in my 2 cents.

I think for us the swing is/was our most valuable piece of equipment.

As a newborn it often helped him sleep in the wee hours of the night.

A playpen with a change table on it on the main floor was wonderful instead of having to run up stairs to the nursery to change him all the day.

We have a change table/dresser combo for the nursery. Thus when he's older the change pad can be removed and he has a really nice dresser that matches his crib (which turns into a toddler bed and then a head and footboard of a double bed)

We have the bath seat that goes from laying flat to sitting upright in the tub (changes as baby grows) and that has been pretty helpful.

so many things out there to chose, it's pretty crazy !

good luck

A.
