I'm noticing more and more lately that people posting on here have mini 'ads' for themselves in their signatures... Your Milton Mortgage Specialist! Your Local Flower Shoppe!.. This didn't bother me at first, but I'm noticing more and more of it lately... in fact, this morning, somebody put a SEARS BANNER in their signature.
I'm guessing good ol Hunter Obee is paying for that lonely ad up there, while the rest of us are just plugging ourselves for free?
I'm conflicted...
or am I??

lol.. as a reader of the posts it doesn't really bother me. Once I have read your message I can stop at your signature.... or can I? lol..

While I am sure you are right that Hunter pays for his banner ad, it also shows up on every page you go to, even here while I am responding to this post!

I say hey, it's your signature put what you like... I'll read it if I want to or skip it otherwise!.. besides I dont read every topic on here and people also start threads in the commercial section about businessess at no charge.

So... what did you do again? I better read your signature!

hehe.. I'm here all week... try the veal!

I know, I just found it funny.. hey, there's a dude's picture, and he specializes in mortgages... would I actually go to him if I needed a mortgage? probably not! Comes across to me as a used car salesman approach for some reason.
and SEARS? I doubt that corporate has approved that ad. Many large companies prohibit employees from using their logo like that.
just one of those things....

hmmm Veal.. is it lunch time yet?

The Sears guy has been doing that for ages, I believe he owns the Sears outlet / catalogue store here in Milton (just across from the Milton Mall).

Not saying that makes it okay by Sears head office but again he does own the store.. .again though like you said it hasn't made me rush out to use his services but I guess it's nice to know he's there if I need something.

So I need to come up with a good signature for you know then... hmm what do I want to be?

I couldn't help but laughing at your post with the signature on the bottom ;-)
As long as the posts with the signatures have a purpose, i.e. they aren't just posting to get their signature/ad out there, but are posting for other reasons, then yes I think they should be perfectly valid. The signature has a secondary purpose to the posting.

Some forums post rules/guidelines along the sizes allowed for signature lines, and what content goes in it. We haven't formalized any here because so far it hasn't been a problem. The signatures I've seen so far are ok to me.

If you are a business owner, and your posting here, as long as your post is worthwhile on it's own, then why not mention your business on the bottom? I don't think of that as spam. But if it looked like someone was posting only so people will see their signature ad, I'd privately talk to them first about it.

Also I don't think it takes away from the sponsorship banners, as they still appear on every post. But I get what you're saying. Different forums have different guidelines on this.

My preference would be if people limited how much junk they put in their sig -- a few lines, and a link, no problem, Fredd's 8 liner, pass :)

I think people with their real:
businesses, full names and lots numbers in their signatures deserves nothing but respect for doing of this.
As long as they are not posting something which is not for adert purpose only.
Sometimes they are doing it for well known trick.
If someone need to wind up his web site they will post at as many forums as possible.
For example they will post their web site at BS (Britney Spears fans blog.) Saying hey, I like yours songs, my web site is...

I guess, I have to put apology for my bad English in my signature.

lol... very true! and no problem on the English!

I'm surprised there is now a full page of replies on this. Thanks for all your comments, everyone.

I guess I can tolerate it too - and you're right, as long as theer are legitimate posts and not spam, I guess I can live with the extra advertising since we're inundated with it wherever we go!

Glad to see that these small business owners are not taking heat for the signature lines. After all, the vast majority of business in this country IS small business, and the vast majority of people out there, are employed by small businesses. So dropping a business name for free when they can, does everyone good. Growth, jobs and tax money for all.

I think most business people are respectful to keep the content in-line, and not post just to get their ad in there. For small business owners, there really isn't an exact line to draw between business and personal things. We're selling all day everyday. It's survival. So, thanks Rick, for allowing them to continue.

And, one other thing to think about .... a tremendous amount of posts on this forum, are for people looking for people (businesses) to help them with their home repair, real estate issues, home inspections, massage therapy, vet, fence builder, drywall guy, lawyer, accountant, doctor, dentist, website designer, mechanic, physic, dog walker, groomer, banker, car detailer, tutor... ok, ok, I think you get my point.
