That is EXACTLY what it will end up being called. |

| can't they shorten it to T.J.S elementary school and maybe put a nice big plaque at the entrance detailing the school name and the person it was named after. |

I think it should come down to mano a mano... Powell vs. Tiger, forget all this useless yip yap. I suggest the first round be a charity fund raiser, winner is the person that raises the most money. The second round should be a series of athletic competitions. The third round should be a musical number performed at the next Milton Fair.
Then, in the event of a tie... a slap-fight to the death!
Winner gets the school named after them. |

Is Tiger Jeet Singh his legal name, or is it Jagjit Singh Hans?
I think the man deserves the honour. Not so sure that his wrestling persona does.
What would the school be named if he had wrestled as Killer Singh, The Undertaker, Dirty Dick, etc. ? If they name a California school after Arnie someday, will it be called Terminator Public School? |

The name should probably be reserved for a high school rather than an elementary school.
Tiger Jeet Singh's profession and community involvement are very significant. When students and faculty discuss what their school name means, they will obviously bring up his entire past. His name was chosen because he is a role model. In his philanthropy he uses his career to give good advice. You can't ignore certain pieces of his past and say he's just a member of the community that contributes more than others.
At an elementary school level, the students may not be mature enough to understand that sports role models such as Tiger Jeet Sighn (wrestling) or George Chuvalo (boxer) are professionals and train to safely perform the their sport. When kids look up to sports role models they may mimic and want to try to be them. This could indirectly lead kids while at school attempting to be like them, such as wrestling with other kids or punching other kids while they're in school, and may not understand this could cause serious injury.
Safe Schools policy: http://www.hdsb.ca/Policy/SafeSchools.pdf
At a secondary level, the students are more mature and can understand the deeper meaning of the name of the school, have the maturity required to understand mimicking their moves may result in serious injury, and that assaulting other students is a serious offence that could get you suspended or expelled. Wrestling programs may be safely setup in high school for students that want to pursue wrestling. This may not work so well in elementary school.
An occasional visit of these sports models to elementary schools may be acceptable but naming the school after them is very significant and should be given deeper thought. A high school in my opinion would be more appropriate. I remember George Chuvalo visiting the high school I went to. He gave a speech on his life as a boxer, his tragic family past, and his fight with drugs. This was well over 10 years ago and I still remember the day he gave the speech. I don't think it would be as important if I was in elementary school and may have understood he was only a boxer.
In summary, the name reflects the entire person, students choose the most significant attribute of the person, elementary students may see Tiger Jeet Sighn as a wrestler while high school students may see him as a Philanthropist and understand the deeper meaning, elementary students may try to mimic wrestling while high school students may decide to perform it safely in a controlled environment, the school name should be for a high school rather than an elementary school. _________________ Andrew Salmons - Milton Council Candidate for Ward 1

OK, I am confused. Is the concern the name does not sound 'right' or he is a wrestler?
Assuming Hulk Hogan lives in Milton will the concern be shorting it to HH Elementary? |

I like your style - finally someone with a sense of humour about all this
Although he'd win in the end - he spends way more time and effort on community involvement than poor old me! But a musical number, that might be fun.
And I have to believe anyone involved in the spectacle of wrestling would be eating this stuff up for it's social media. Hell - I'm probably making his case for him as far as I know - free publicity and all |

I apologize if my answer came off glib and sounding as if political correctness should be the driving force behind decision making.
I voted the way that I did last night because I truly believe Tiger Jeet Singh's involvement in the school will be a positive thing for kids.
The students will always be at the heart of any decision I make. |
And I apologize if I came off sounding abrasive. That particular issue always sets me off on a rant heh |

This is my son's future school we are taking about. I have nothing against Tiger Jeet Singh & think it is wonderful that he & his son are involved in charity work...but:
1) this name is not appropriate because of the fact that the school is an elementary school (for the reasons others have mentioned). I wouldn't care really if it was a high school.
2) this name is a mouthful for small children to have to say. I would just say my son goes to Tiger or TJ Singh. I would not say the whole name.
3) the man is still alive. I find it strange naming a building after someone who is still alive, but then again, I went to a middle school & high school that were both named after dead politicians.
Coates Crossing would have been my preference.

I honestly think it would be a better tribute to Mr. Singh if Milton dedicated a wing of a sports complex to him, say if the sports center had a wrestling area, and there could be a display case outlining his life, his humanitarian efforts, etc.
A little off the wall but consider this; if there was an Adult Entertainment star who lived in Milton, built their career up in the industry and went around the world speaking up about AIDS awareness, safe sex, drug abuse and who also participated in the Toy Drive would it be appropriate to name a school after said person? You have to judge a person based on everything they do, not just one aspect of it. |

This decision is rubbish! This is purely a politically influenced decision which has lined some pockets with nice, soft bills.
Although he may do some good, he is easily forgotten (sorry - just the perspective of an average Miltonian)... living on the complete opposite side of town in his gated mansion on the escarpment. Sure it's nice naming it after a accomplished person of the community, but at the root of all his accomplishments, is entertainment wresting. "The joke" in the world of sports. Now my son is supposed to go to this school? Give your head a shake HDSB.
Don't get me wrong, I support diversity.
Personal opinion, if the funding comes from the Federal/Provincial government to the region, the person of whom a school is named after should be born in Canada. _________________ Coates Crossing

Yikes.....please tell me you didn't mean that!!! He is Canadian....that is all that matters! Have we already forgotten our Canadian pride from the Olympics. Come on, what makes Canada great is that most of us came from somewhere else. My family came here in 1786 according to our ancestry and that doesn't make me more entitled to be Canadian or have a school named after me because we were one of the first immigrants here!
My kids will go to this school. I am not a fan of this name, but I am a fan of what he has done for our community. Perhaps the school board can agree to shorten it to T.J. Singh Public School. The name is just too long in my opinion. Perhaps this will keep people happy! |
