Hello All,

I was reading the Champion today and the front page article was about the local Salvation Army Food Bank shelves running bare. I've done a bit of volunteering in the past for Sally Ann and donate my clothing to them when we do closet purges so it's an organization I really like. And, the food bank helps locals.

I'd like to make a plea to the on-line community to step up and help our local Salvation Army Food Bank continue to feed Milton and everyone go and donate - even if it's one can of tuna it all adds up.

Drop box pantries are located in The Superstore, Metro, Walmart Superstore and Food Basics. They are large red wooden cabinets with doors, not the usual open topped bins. I think you just open one of the cabinet doors and leave your donation. They will also take donations at their Nipising Drive location (100 Nipising Drive, Unit 3).

They really need staples like tuna, rice, etc. No soup please. The article said it's one thing they don't need.

Here's the article link if you'd like more info:
http://www.insidehalton.com/community/m ... cle/835454

I've got my bag prepared to drop off tomorrow! I challenge you all to do the same!

Kim

What is everyone doing this weekend?

Lets see what HV'rs can do to help this out. I'll answer Kim's challenge and ask that everyone either today, tomorrow or Sunday go to their local store and buy some food for the food bank.

Anyone else game?

I'm game :P

The Milton Salvation Army location that the article mentions at 100 Nipissing Rd., unit 3 is only open 9am to 2pm monday, tuesday, wednesday & friday (Closed Thursday & weekends).

But as Kim mentioned you can do drop offs at those grocery stories! Makes it more convenient to do your grocery shopping and then drop off all at the same place.

Im willing to drive around and pick up any donations that people want to make if they cant make it out to the shopping centres this weekend.

Email mike@mikecluett.ca and let me know what date and time you would like to have me pick up a donation. All donations received will be delivered to the Salvation Army office under the name of the people making the donation.

Lets see what we can do to help out our local residents in need.

According to the article... the need has gone up and a large number of those in need are kids. ANY donation would be good.

Thanks for letting us know. I donated a bunch of stuff on a Costco trip last Feb, and will make another Costco trip this weekend and buy some stuff for them. I don't trust those grocery store drop-offs personally and would rather drop off in person on my own.

I support this cause strongly because I personally LOVE food, and feel sorry for people, especially kids, who don't have enough to eat. If kids are malnourished, they can't study well, can't grow properly, and they can't keep up with the other well-fed kids when playing. I am not a parent, but I feel sorry for the kids because they are innocent and depend on adults.

That is great!!!!

What I'll be doing this weekend as I go door knocking with the family is we will be asking everyone to make a donation to the food bank. I already have one pick up scheduled so if you have something, and youd like me to come pick it up, call my cell 647-888-9032 or email mike@mikecluett.ca

As for the drop off locations they are pretty secure and they are picked up by the Salvation Army. Do things disappear as people are walking out? Quite possible but not likely.

If you feel better, drop it off at the Nippissing location to make sure they do get it. Lets try to make an impact this weekend!

I pulled some staples from my pantry Friday and hubby dropped it off at the Nipissing location after lunch as it's just down the street from where he works (pasta sauce, macaroni noodles, beans, can tuna, can salmon) then also made a drop in the pantry at Metro when I had to do a quick shop for dinner (OJ drink boxes, apple sauce snacks, bag of rice - staple items that also happened to be on sale).

I'm going to make picking up a few extra items each week part of my shopping habit. How's everyone else do? Even one item is greatly appreciated.

I also did a quick sweep through Metro for the most wanted items and put them in the pantry. I'll be around in the afternoon trying to get others to donate and then drop off at Nippissing as well.

Like Kim said, even if its just one item, its something.

Thanks!!!

I dropped off some tuna cans at the Superstore today. I actually did not know that there was a collection box there. I don't feel so bad though - I asked a couple of staff members to point me to one, and they didn't know either.

I got a big box of canned goods ready to go to Nipissing tommorrow.

Clover Leaf tuna is on sale at Wal-Mart for $0.77 a can. I stacked my cart with them this morning along with 1kg tubs of PB for $2.47 ea.

Maybe Freemantrail family could help me understand the process. How does a family qualify to get food stamps in town? Is there an application process? Considering the scarcity of food donations, I'm curious, and also want re-assurance that there are processes in place where people truly in need are getting it, and not opportunistic people/scammers who can do without the stamps.

You must have been one of the first today. :) By last night the staff knew exactly where it was (it's tucked in by the customer service desk if anyone is wondering) and it was really full ... hopefully they emptied it to make more room for today.

It's been a bit since I asked that question but there definitely is an application/screening process to ensure the people who really do need it get it. I would call the office to ask about specifics to alleviate your concerns. When I have volunteered for the toy drive at Christmas the families are pre-screened and are given a set allowance for gifts per child based on age and are walked through and assisted by a volunteer who has been educated in the process. I'm not sure on the specifics for the food hamper throughout the year. But, the Salvation Army staff here also do get to know the families as well so there's more beyond the paper application process too.
