We should start a list of all the useless laws in Ontario. First on the list would be banning the use of handheld devices whilst driving. I mean I am sick of how many people feel they can just ignore the law completely.

This morning at around 6:40 am, eastbound on Derry, the woman in the car on the left of me ( dark grey/charcoal Mazda 3 - last three digits 179 ) had the cellphone glued to her ear, held by her right hand. She had the carseat in the back ( couldn't see if the kid was there ) with the Jolly Jumper shade in the right rear window. She was on that cell for more than 10 minutes, driving along, intent on her conversation. It was not a quick emergency call. It made me remember the woman who was talking on her cell and ran off the road into a river and she and her toddler drowned waiting for help. I think it was one of those cases that led to this law.

Why do we feel we get to pick and choose what laws we follow? Mad

The law is stupid - I'm really good at driving on a cell phone, but the rest of you shitty-driving dorks have ruined it for me. Thank science for bluetooth though.

From what I've seen on the road, this no-cell-phone law should apply to women only. (yowza did he just say that?!)

I dont think lack of enforcement can make a law useless. As much as I hate this law and can handle driving with my cellphone and a 6 speed manual car, there's more idiots out there that can't do it. What we need is more better enforcement of the law.

And yes, thanks for Bluetooth!

Its stupid they ban cellphones, but not reading the paper while driving. Or drinking coffee. Sounds like someone didnt pay off the politicians on time. Too busy worrying about iphone launches. lol

its true, hand held cell phone usage by drivers has gone up bigtime.. yesterday i saw a girl talking on lower base line during rush hour, and eventually got stuck behind a cyclist b/c talking with your right hand up by your ear distracted her from passing the cyclist safely while other cars approached from the other direction.... someone completely focused could have made the pass.

I would love to hear the stats on the number of car accidents in ontario since they put this law into place. I'll bet anything that accidents have not gone down, in fact, I'll bet they've gone up with everyone fiddling with their new bluetooths.

I wonder which driver was more distracted and more of a danger on the road? Was it the one on the cell phone, or the one obsessed with what the person in the car next to her was doing?

In the end distraction is distraction. At least the cell phone driver was likely looking forward when driving.

If the guy behind either has a cellphone or a piping hot coffee in his hands, I'd rather he had the cellphone.

The law itself is nonsense, not the least due to the fact that drivers on bluetooth systems have been found to be equally distracted.

This law should be extended to the grocery store. Do you know how many times my buggy is stuck behind someone gossiping on their cell while they completely block the isle...just pull your buggy over to the side and talk all you want!!!!

You may actually have a point except I wasn't the one driving. Why do you assume that I was and jump so eagerly to defend this law breaker?

Obsessed is such a strong word. No one followed her to her destination and attacked her once her vehicle stopped moving. Nor did anyone try to gain her attention, by waving or making gestures that would distract her further. No road rage behaviour was involved. So where is the obsession?

She broke the law (and was not in her own backyard when doing it ) so someone should take notice. Hey, you wouldn't happen to own a dark grey/charcoal madza 3 with the last three digits 179 would you? Wink

There have been a number of studies done in other jurisdictions, google it and you'll get results like this one:

http://www.wgal.com/news/22384403/detail.html

bottom line in all the ones I've seen is that it has done nothing to the accident rate...

Oh I dunno... Maybe it lies somewhere in the tracking of what a complete stranger does for 10 minutes. Trying to memorize the colour, make and plate number of the car they drive, then rushing home or to work to tell the interent about it right away so you can talk and think about it for the rest of the day?

It might be somewhere in there.

The ban on cellphones was nothing more than a political ploy to get votes. No doubt it was argued that it needed to be done "for the children".
