Has anyone heard of this. My mortgage lender provided me with the application for this.

CMHC offers a 10% rebate on mortage loan premium when a borrower buys an energy efficient home. or refinances energy-saving renovations.

oee.nrcan.gc.ca

you can download the application from there as well.

We received this 10 % refund. The only trouble we had was that CMHC came back after submitting the application to say we were not registered with them. AFter calling my mortgage holder and getting my CMHC # I was able to get my refund. I also got an additional refund from my mtge company because my mortgage broker did not relay to them that I had an energy efficient house which also lowered the premium they had charged me. I think it was an extra $1,200. or so.

Question...we are putting a 25% down payment on our home therefore not paying CMHC mortgage insurance....are we still eligible for any sort of refund??? And it's 10% of what?

nope.

The refund is for "high ratio" mortgages insured through Genworth or CMHC that are new energy star rated homes. It has to be a new build..so purchased directly from the builder, not a resale, even if it is a resale energy star home.

The refund is 10% of the insurance premium that you paid, which was tacked onto the top of your mortgage amount. You fill out the form received, along with attaching a copy of the energy star certificate, and they send you a cheque, that you can apply to your mortgage, or keep to use on your own.

Hope this helps!!

Jessica :)

Its not "free money" you paid the $$.

I don't think its just for new homes built by a builder - if you read up on it - you could hire someone to make your home energy efficient - but you have to get inspectors & stuff to come and evaluate your home to see if its energy efficient to the standards that are required to get the rebate.

It took me 8 months from when I moved in to get the refund- about 4 months for Mattamy to deliver my energy efficient certificate and another 4 for CMHC to send me the rebate! I was calling in to them about once every 2 wks- they said that there was a problem with my street name as all the paper work had said Street K, and the Lot #- not my actual address - they go by what the Agreement of Purchase and Sale says and then told me that I didn't have a CMHC # on my application - so make sure you write down your CMHC # and give them both your address and the address that was on your agreement of purchase and sale so that it doenst take forever to get to you.

That is true, Valerie....it is also for homes that are not energy star qualified, if you do renovations/improvements to make them energy star qualified, then you also qualify for the discount from the premium.

Absolutely you need your reference number from either CMHC or Genworth, you can either find it on your lender's approval they gave you, or by contacting your mortgage representative. I wouldn't send in your forms without it, as it has a very good chance of going into never never land without it...as that is one of they only ways they have of finding you.

With most new builds, as with Mattamy homes, the paperwork is often drawn up with just the original lot number, and sometimes even Street A or whatnot. At the time of closing, lawyers amend the documents to reflect the civic address that has since been assigned to your home during the building process....and often this has not been updated to reflect everyone's file by the time you have applied for the rebate.

Hope this helps a bit.

Jessica :)

Jessica: You had written that it had to be a new home by a builder on an earlier post-- thats why I clarified-

Even after I called in my CMHC# - no one notified me that the street address did not match - I kept calling to follow up on my cheque - if this happens to you keep calling - I called over 5 times before I actually talked to someone who knew what I was talking about and could tell me what the problem was with my file and getting my rebate.

How do I know if my home is qualified for this refund. I live in a shady glen that is less than two years old. All appliances in the house are energy star if that matters at all

First off - what phase are you in and 2nd - did you have to have CHMC insurance added to your motgage?

The appliances are not the energy star issue - an energy star house has many requirements it must meet that involve all aspects of building/heating etc. If it meets these standards it is issued an energy star certificate and with this you can get back 10% of your CMHC premium.

Sorry for reopening this thread after a long time.

I have question on 10% CMHC refund on energy star homes.

I got mortgage and CMHC in 2005, but it was not an energy star home. I sold this house and now moved in to an energy star home. I ported my mortage to my energy star home.

Am I eligible for 10% CMHC refend now?

Thanks,

We got our Energy Efficient certificate on the day of closing. We didn't actually submit this to Genworth (we went with Genworth instead of CMHC) until last month and they sent us a cheque within 2 weeks. And it was a surprise as I was only expecting a 10% refund of the premium, however, they returned the extra premium we had to pay b/c we chose a higher amortization period. It was definitely a NICE surprise.
