Post subject:  Painting outside window frame
The wooden frames of my 10 year old house are due for a new coat of paint.

I picked up some of that paint/primer in one, but I’m wondering if I can just lightly sand off the old paint and slap the new stuff on top, or if I’m better off striping the paint down to bare wood.

Any tips?

If you sand it down to a smooth finish, you should be fine. It wont matter if the old paint is on the frame. The key is making sure the surfacce is smooth & even.

I used the paint and primer Behr from homedepot, great stuff. just scrape all the loose paint off, and give it a good sanding by hand, thats good enough. the paint needs something to grip into, take your time and be sure to scrape any loose chips and give it good sanding, wait a few hrs between coats of paint, 2 coats should do it.

ps.. make sure you use a good product not a low priced paint and primer.

THE FIRST COAT SHOULDNT APPLY A HEAVY COAT OF PAINT, IT SHOULD SEAL THE WOOD AND BE A BASE FOR THE 2ND COAT, 2ND COAT CAN BE HEAVIER.

If there is any rot at all on the window frames, especially at the sills, then saturate that area with this wood hardener product. This product is available at most hardware stores. I got mine at Home Hardware.

This product will harden and stabilize any soft or rotted wood.
