I was thinking the samething. I'm just waiting to hear that someone on council is buying a flashy car, or going to Hawaii.

We have one. I think it was $250 supplied and installed IIRC, almost 3 years ago. Got it done by Brian White (BriWhi on the forum). We'd originally purchased one at HD for close to $200 plus taxes (i think), but it wasn't as high quality and it was almost $200 plus taxes before installation. So we took it back and had the better one installed for less money overall. Which was nice!

Working great so far, lights still green ... they will go to red to warn you when it's taken a large enough hit or hits that it should be replaced. Been almost 3 years so far and it's still full-on green, knock on wood. You just need to remember to check the lights every now and again; we try to check it after major storms. Here's a pic, it's at the bottom of our panel:

Brian installed the exact same one for us, also about three years ago. We've never had any issues and still showing solid green as well. It's a small price to pay for the piece of mind. Highly recommend this.

What is it guaranteed to do. Some only protect against voltage variations caused by the power company while others guarantee protection in the case of lightning strikes.

Lightning. But if it takes a hit it could destroy the actual surge protector, which is why the green lights are important. If the lights are green it hasn't yet taken a hit that's affected it's ability to keep working. But better to lose a $250 surge protector than your appliances.

Could this be easily installed if I'll buy one from Home Depot?
