So i laid some fertilizer this afternoon on the lawn because it's getting pretty patchy but by accident I put the dial at twice the amount it called for, now i've dropped twice the fertilizer I should have.....It states on the bag to apply the fertilizer to a wet lawn and NOT to water for a few days after. Now i'm freaking out because i don't want a brown lawn.

Should I just leave it or should I water the hell out of it and hope it washes through???

Well, in the world according to me, you have 4 options.

Vigorous raking in hopes of pulling some of it off the lawn.

Get on hands and knees and pick individual granules by hand

Water the crap out of lawn for a few days

Do nothing; roll the dice and see what happens - maybe the lawn will be happy?

Good luck.

It might burn. Got a shopvac?

When you applied the fertilizer, did you notice that it was collecting in large amounts on the grass. Or was it just twice the amount recommended by the manufacturer. I say this as the amount recommended by the manufacturer is fairly conservative. With that said, the instructions typically ask you to go over the grass with a second application- but in an alternate direction to promote even coverage. When i apply fertilizer - its always twice the amount and I do 2 applications. I have never had a problem.

So If you applied once- but double the amount recommended- (and it wasn't collecting in large amounts) you should be ok. Just let it do its thing. If you can pick handfulls of the stuff up off the grass - get the shopvac out and start praying to the grass gods for help

If you have one of those rakes that rakes up stones, etc. I would use that first to see what you can rake up. Then water the lawn as much as you can for the next few days. I burnt my grass last year with too much fertilizer.

This is summer time... why would you want to fert now?
Best bet now is to water... and I mean water the fert out of your lawn.... OR do nothing. If it does turn brown it will be back to normal next spring ;)

Why not call the manufacturer and ask what they suggest. Their number will be on the bag.

Maybe you can get / borrow a lawnmower with a bagger. Mine is like a vacuum and sucks everything up.

Thank you everyone for all the great advice, I did call the manufacturer and they said something similar to "nmploid's" response, I think i will take they chance and just leave it to see what it does...If it happens to burn well i'm sure it will come back next year and for the mean time it will just match most of the lawn on my street anyways or maybe i will just lay a whole bunch of clover seed to cover it up.
