you could also save yourself the money and do it yourself one weekend before your house is drywalled. My husband spent a few hours doing that and it's come in handy. He also retaped all the ducts at the joints, which is great because Mattamy really does the bare minimun when taping and there were many holes. Just a suggestion!

It is not very smart to cut a 2 inch hole in the frame of your house from the attic to the basement. You cannot just put it anywhere.
Is it worth the risk to save $203??? There are much safer things you can do before the drywallers come in that will save you a heck of a lot of more money then a measly $203 on a house worth over a few hundred thousand dollars.

What kinds of things can you do without Mattamy noticing?

I didn't say they will not notice, but if you talk to your builder you can usually run your own potlights, get a garage door entry roughed in, prewire your media neiche, run speaker cable, run extra phone lines, there are a lot of things.

Perhaps I should have included that my husband is a licensed tradesman who has worked in construction for years.

You may be able to get away with things that do not require a license to install or inspections to pass. Electrical, plumbing, hvac, gas lines, etc.. all require licensing and inspections.

However, if you rough something in and it's in the way of something else, prepare to have it removed or covered up.

If you rough-in something incorrectly, prepare to have it removed.

If you rough-in something incorrectly and it costs your builder time(money) then prepare for an extra delay on your house.

I was told, when an inspector does a site visit and find extra cable run, that is not on his paper work, he has the athority to shut down a large portion of the site till he has inspected all the home. That is why if you have installed cable, the builder will rip it out as soon as he find it to lessin the downtime.
