Hello all,

I was at work today, which is located around Younge St and the 401 in Toronto.

I called home as i often do, but today the call would not go through.

It kept asking me to dial 1 before the area code, indicating that it was now long distance!

I have been calling from the same location for over 5 years and never once had to enter the 1 up front.

Anyone else experience this today?

I think different phone carriers have different long distance areas. Did your company recently change carriers? I believe AT&T for example has a large local calling circle then Bell Business does....

Land lines have always been long distance to call Milton (even Mississauga & Vaughan says long distance when calling here)
Cellular and virtual lines usually do not have this issue

Official link (which is updated before numbers assigned for use) can be found here:
http://www.cnac.ca/co_codes/co_code_status_map.htm

The other link posted above is curious as it shows Rogers & Bell LCA being the same, which is totally not true!

When I call home to Milton from work (10th line and Derry in Mississauga) its long distance. When my parents call from Etobicoke its a local call... Doesn't make sense.....

Has to do with local calling area. It doesn't make sense because each company has their own LCA (eg one person on Bell Canada and Bell Mobility standing in exact same spot have different local numbers; it gets worse once other brands are mixed in like Rogers)

Your work likely uses VOIP - most companies do these days. I use VOIP for my landline, and usually it's okay, but once in a while it goofs and says it's long distance. No diff, cuz voip doesn't charge extra for Canada / US LD calls, however its a pain to redial with a 1 due to my progammed numbers in my phone.

Not all VOIP is unlimited LD (there are local only plans)
Many companies do still use physical landlines
