Has anyone enrolled in their membership? I heard they have unbeatable prices with a great selection. I saw their infomercial on tv and it seemed to good to be true.

My aunt has a membership....there is a one time fee od 1500 or 2000 approx. and then (i think but am not certain) there are yearly fees associated with maintaining the membership. If you are willing to pay the money and will spend enough $ there you may recover the cost of the initial fees and then save but if you intend only to purchase a few things there it may not be worth it. she did say however everything is purchased through catalogues so you need to shop around get model numbers and if they carry that manufacturer then you buy it through the catalogue they have in the store...there are no floor models of things it is all catalogue shopping. If you know someone who has a membership they can purchase things on your behalf and get it delievered to your home.. a member cannot bring non members into the store as guests so they willhave to do it for you.

Thanks Adrienne. They called me today and I got an invitation to check it out. If I save more that $2000 on all my appliances than I will go for it so thta I can buy other things with them.

I've heard they really try to do a hard sell on you if you attend their open house and that they won't show you detailed pricing until after you join? I haven't gone to the Open House myself but I'm a little suspicious.

Before you go, look up prices of a lot of appliances you want, and remember the retail price you see at the Brick, Leons, Bad Boy, etc is not what you'll actually pay if you buy more than 1. They'll (large retailors like the Brick) usually come down in price anyways if you were planning on buying a lot of appliances. So figure out how much furniture, appliances, etc you want and then see what type of deal you can get from a conventional big retailor if you bought it all together. Then with that knowledge written down go to the Direct Buy Open house, find out how much they'll charge for everything you wanted, add on the membership price, and see if you're really saving money.

If you go to the Open House and you don't join then-and-there they say they won't allow you to join in the future. It's sort of make a decision right there and then or never.

Again this is just what I've heard from friends. Sounds like Stephen and his wife saved a lot so there's some positive feedback saying maybe it is a good deal if doing significant purchases.

My fiance and I just went to the Open House in Mississauga last night. Initial fee is $3500 for a 2 year membership, and they give you the option to lock in for another 8 years at $220 a year.

Obviously with us going to purchase things to furnish our house, with the appliances alone we'd make back the $3500 in savings. Unfortunately we denied the membership only because with a wedding and house closing 3 weeks from each other, we didn't budget for $3500.

If 1 couple got the membership and we all pitch in to purchase though them, would they catch on that the couple is purchasing 3 or 4 sets of appliances and sofas?!?!?!

That, is an EXCELLENT post...we have also been through the hard sell and persistence of the DirectBuy/UC sales people, but declined to attend their presentation.

AL247, I can't thank you enough for your post. I've been hearing many of the same things that you said. They never show you any prices. I'm not even going to bother setting up an open house time with them.

I actually went as far as to set up an open house but when the girl phoned me to confirm the date she mentioned at the end that both my wife and I must attend together as we have to make a decision that night. I said "Thank you for your time but I won't be attending. Please take me off your mailing lists" and that was the end of it.

Well, one big advantage of going VOIP: NO TELEMARKETERS.

Well, if you get a new number, you're practically safe as VOIP numbers are by default not listed anywhere. No 411, no whitepages. For some this might be a drawback, but I like it. If you transfered the old number, you're out of luck.

If they are asking for Mr. or Mrs. Wood, maybe they have the wrong number and meant to call our house!
