Attention to detail is not a Mattamy strong point. Adding this small piece of insulation properly around the perimeter of the concrete floor will not cost much and will not take much time.

"What did they do before?"

In the diagram that I posted showing detail. It shows the proposed "rigid insulation bond break". This small piece of insulation will effectively separate the interior floor from the cold exterior wall stopping the migration of heat to the outside of the home. Apparently this small detail was neglected and not installed in previous homes. Therefore the interior concrete floor and exterior concrete wall contact each other allowing a path for heat to escape.

While technically not accurate, the diagram below shows that heat will escape from the home unless this perimeter break is there to stop it.

Fitdiculous,

Check out page 31 in this thread. I had taken pics befor they had started the framing. I am not sure you can tell from the picture but I do know there was that blue insulation on your foundation wall before the slab was poured.

hope that helps.

Hey Andrea,

Ya, that was the pic I was talking about, and yes thank you for taking it as I saw the vertical insulation... just wanted to see after when the slab was poured (before the framing)...

do you notice much of a temp difference now? like I'm assuming you've had A/C on a few times now.. is it alot cooler in the summer?

Ed and Sharon,
When I had my frame walk I broght up the concern to my builder and he said that this floor will be colder then upstairs but it is normal to have a temp difference between the two because the home is on a concrete slab. He didn't tell be about the insulation break the way HHI -Andy did in the diagram above but I have pictures of my foundation from before they poured the slab and I remember seeing the blue insullation. I don't remember whether there was bllue insulation over the gravel part before they poured the slab. Now since I moved in I have noticed a temp difference between the top two floors and the ground. To the point that I have to have on a sweater down there at times. I then realized that I had the air condititoning set at 72 degrees during the day while I was there and that made the ground floor too cold. I now have the air conditioning off during the day and the room has been fine so far. I am concerned about the winter though. Only time will tell.

If one were to sneak into the living room of his future residence and take a picture this is what one would see.... not that *I* would do that because *I* know that I'm not supposed to be on the construction site.... *ahem*

Tony and Stella, really nice to meet you guys! Nice to finally meet a future neighbour :)

Wow they're REALLY kicking things into high gear

Our roof and April/Joel's is well under way, and Lisa and Paul they've started your place as well.... This will probably be a good weekend to visit for those of you that don't on a regular basis because they're getting a lot done. I drop by pretty well every night on the way home so if anyone wants an update on their lot lemme know... other than Tony and Stella... your place is still just a lot of dirt ;-)

I try and go every weekend, but if you see any significant changes on our lot (65) then that would be cool 8)

Rob where do you live/work now if you don't mind me asking?

No 64 is completely roofed (other than shingles) I believe.. they've done a LOT of work the last two days... april only had a second floor on sunday and they're working on her roof today...

Ya we're in Mattamy over in Hawthorne Village at Derry and Thompson right now... commute isn't so bad, ranges from 1/2 hour to an hour depending on the day.. in winter it can get pretty hairy, but luckily you only get that a couple of times per season...

wow, that's insane! I wonder when everyone else is closing??? you and April/Joel close a month before me I think...

just down the street from the new site eh?! what type of home are you guys in now? 1/2 hour really? actually I could see that... just strait down Derry I'm assuming? I guess the traffic gets bad around Mississauga Road/401 area...
