OK so add one small other issue to be aware of... we had a problem with our mail... they're mixing up Magurn Gate and Lane... even though the addresses are different... I went into the post office to find out what the hell was going on because we hadn't gotten any mail in 2 weeks (since we ordered the redirect)... they were holding onto our mail as if it was for 274 magurn gate... even though that address doesn't exist instead of forwarding it to our box.... also a couple of the utilities are mixing up the address as well... sure they'll eventually sort it out but just giving you guys a heads up to keep an eye on your mail....

thanks for the head's up Rob, what is this "redirect" that you ordered? what does that mean? I've never had to use these sepearate mail boxes as my parents lived in an older neighbourhood and we're in a condo now

You go to the post office and have any mail that's destined for your old home redirected to your new home, can't remember what the exact cost is but it's a service canada post offers... We've used it in the past and never had problems with it..... the mail boxes are ok, we've been using them since our first place in Milton, you get used to it... right now they're kind of far away (on Scott, but on the way in/out at least) but they usually move them closer once construction is done... it'll be interesting to see where ours ends up

I'm assuming you would still have to notify places that usually send you mail (ie. your credit card statements etc) of your new address? this is just so make sure you get ALL your mail before you make any changes with these places?

wicked... thanks for letting us know Rob, that's a good service for sure... ya I hope they move the mailboxes relatively close... can't imagine going to get the mail in a -20 degree snowstorm (yes I'm a princess) :P

how does bigger packages work? do they try and deliver it to the door and if no one is home they leave a slip for us to pick it up at the post office?

No door delivery at all.. they have a package slot in the mailboxes so if you got a package that will fit they'll leave a key for you to get it.. if not you got to pick it up at the local post office retail outlet (most likely the shoppers that's being built at bronte/derry).

Hi All...

With closing around the corner for mostly all of us, wanted to get a poll of what ppl are doing re. certain areas:

Phone? Cable? Internet? - Whats the best deal out there ... what are you guys going with? Bell , Primus (landline or VOIP (but what about the alarm), Cogeco???

Utility setup - Is it a pain?

Window Coverings - I need 24 separate blinds at last count! What you guys go with faux wood, wood, cali shutters, curtain/drapes, custom, install yourself???

michanda - I remember you saying something about taking some measurements was it for window coverings, you feel my pain I'm sure of 24 blinds being needed I'm sure?!?!

Good questions Tony! I'm in the same boat being our first first home all of this is so new... I may try that 3 month free special that Cogeco is doing.. I know Rob posted a link a couple of pages ago I think.

Window coverings is another hard thing.. since we all have 3 stories it's going to be pricier than most houses I think. You guys may have more being corner lotter's. My friend who lives on goutouski is getting shutters (California TYPE shutters) I think the "real deal" is like ridiculously expensive... I'm gonna check out her place soon and get an idea of how they are

Hey guys, just did the Cogeco thing, easy as hell, just call up that number I posted and tell them you bought a new Mattamy home and presto blammo free 3 months service for tv internet (and phone if you go with them) plus one free box rental.... So we're using them for tv/internet and I'm using a wholesale voip provider (voip.ms) for phone, it is pretty complicated to set up for the average person the $6 a month phone bills are nice compared to the $50 ones from cogeco ;-) We didn't get the mattamy security system, my understanding is that if you did you are stuck with Bell as a phone provider.

Tony, utilities are easy, we've been in Milton a while so Hydro waved the deposit for us, but they may ask you to put down a security deposit from what I've been told. The others are straight forward, just make sure you do it ahead of time (except for the water heater, that you will get after you move in).

We had 25+ windows to cover as well... (we actually have a few more to do). We just went with cheap 1" aluminum blinds for the time being to get something up, did all for under $400. We'll replace them down the road after we decide on a colour scheme (after a year or two waiting for the house to finish settling so we don't have to paint multiple times).

Thanks Rob!

Anyone else?

OK another one .... what paint did you all pick???

We chose LINEN but am double thinking that maybe PORTABELLO would have been the better choice.

I though PORTABELLO initially was to dull or too grey but I've seen in pictures thats its not too bad.

Cheers,
T

Thanks for the info Rob, does that free box include an HD PVR? or is it just a standard digital box?

so $6 a month with voip eh? well I'm definitely not "techy" so I guess I'm the "average person" :P

would you be able to help out set that up? you take beer as payment? :D

how far in advanced do you have to setup the utilities?

Tony - We picked Portabello and it looks really nice... goes really well with our colours. We may keep that colour in most of the rooms actually...

Also, maybe if we all decide to go with shutters we can try and do a mini group buy and see if we can get some additional savings.

We have the same questions.

When we had a little (under 600 sq.ft) 1 bedroom in Waterloo, hydro was $150 a month so we are little freaked out. Any one have any estimates for the a 3 story house!?

We have the security system so Bell it is...

We have Portabello so you can come to our house, Tony, and decide if you like it.

We feel your pain about the windows. We are doing block out blinds in the bedrooms and faux wood on the first and second floors.

Ed, I am a princess too... :)

Michele

we have a 3bedroom 1300sqft 3 story, our average is about 70 a month, gas is like 30, obviously it does change depending on how cold out or how hot it is, and what temp i run things at, and how long. But it's not too bad.

Hi Sharon,

It just depends if you're planning on doing one or multiple trips but from the sound of what you've got the 12 or 16' would do.

If you're not having movers and relying on the man the myth and the legend 'fitdiculous' to do all the lugging I've rented from the Ontario truck rental place right by his work b4. On Dundas just off Erin Centre, I'll dig up the name for you!

Cheers,
Tony
