You know, all this coyote talk, from this tread and others, I have started to become concerned walking my dog at night. But then I started researching coyotes and attacks and started to realize that if you do get confronted by one of these animals, loud noises would probably scare them away. So really besides the late night wake up, are they really causing a problem to anyone???

I used to fish the credit river a lot. And I've come across cayotes a couple of times. One time I had one come out of the bushes just 10 feet in front of me on a small path. When it saw me, it just darted the other way.

Another time I came across a really big one in the middle of the night right at the park entrance. Once again, the moment it noticed me, it took off in the opposite direction.

I know that every now and then you hear about some cayote attack on a human. But I think you're more likely to get hit by lightning.

So I really don't think we have anything to worry about, unless you let your dog run around at night without a leash. But of course any responsible pet owner wouldn't do that. Right? ;)

No coyotes by my house. Just Rabbits, lots of skunks recently and some cougars.

There have been a couple of dead "somethings" left in the park by us. My husband saw one and a neighbour saw another. They could not even make out what kind of animal it was; it was just big hunks of flesh with some of the guts visible. Ick. There definately are still wild animals around!

I don't want to alarm anyone but there is a huge Cougar population explosion in Milton.

Halton Region will be posting this around town and in the media shortly.

Okay, I thought you were serious about the cougars since I live very close to you, but I see you meant those cougars.

We should re-name the town Milfton.

Getting back to Coyotes.

I wouldn't worry to much about them, where I currently live we have 5 acres of land that backs onto the escarpment. We naturally have a lot of wild life on our property from bunnies, raccoons, deer to the odd coyote. At night we have fire at our firepit towards the back of our property line, it overlooks the escarpment, pretty much every fire night we hear the coyote's howling in the fields. They have never come to our area while we we're out. They only are howling to try to call my dog out. I have no worries of the coyotes coming near our home while we are out at night I fear those pesty little raccoons. :x

Oh don't get me wrong, I LOVE wildlife. And I love Milton's proximity to the escarpment...I just get really creeped out by their "screaming" at night. Really spooky!

A 19 year old Toronto girl has been killed by two coyotes while hiking on Cape Breton Island. I guess they're not to be taken lightly.

I'll take my chances with the coyote any day over a "gang bang" or a drive by which is becoming more & more heard of in the big T.O.

You know, there are many people on threads around here that disagree or have respectful debates about the content. I think the post I quote above from Richard seems unnecessarily rude and dismissive at a time when a young singer was killed by coyotes as HHI noted. Now, to be fair, coyote attacks are rare, but the odd fatal attack happens. Also, yes, Milton's HV and HVE were built in previously wild or natural areas. Yes coyotes and other wildlife is displaced. So I agree with what may be behind Richard's post. However, to dismiss other views like the post I quoted seems insensitive and arrogant. We should respect each others views and discuss the merit of the views. That's the level of debate we're used to around here by the vast majority of posters.

Here's the article on the coyote attack: http://www.thestar.com/mobile/news/gta/ ... music-star

There are other articles online that talk about the rarity of such attacks.

Salut
