"Unplug it, problem solved" ????????????????????

What ever you do, don't do that.

You are one of the many people who have a busy sump system. You may be able to set up the float and pump a bit differently but that won't do much.

If it's turning ON and going OFF then it sounds like the thing is running properly. This problem could be because of lot grading problems, no splash-block under the sump pipe, an underground stream, a neighbours downspout or sump discharging beside your house, etc.

You should buy a Flood Alarm from Home Hardware to help you monitor the situation and consider a back-up system of some sort.

Go outside to see where the sump is dumping the water. Add a pipe or something to the sump pipe to divert the water far from the house. This way your sump will not be pumping the same water all the time.

I would like to elaborate but I have to go now.

Andy

If your pump rarely ran before then something has changed. Check these three things:
(1) Are your downspouts and splash pads leading your roof water well away from the house.
(2) Has the grading around your house settled so that water is collecting against the house in some locations.
(3) Is your sump pump discharging well away from the house.
In all likelyhood one of those three things has changed.

The builder should have installed a check valve in the outlet to begin with.

UPS will help in a power interuption but it won't do you much good if your pump packs it in. A back-up pump may be more beneficial.

When you talk about a backup pump are you talking about automatic failover or just one standing by that you have to manually switch over to? i.e you notice something's wrong so you pull out the bad pump and put in a new one.

Or can you get a secondary failover pump that automatically kicks in at water level that's a bit higher than what triggers the first pump?

You need both to be fully protected - a backup power supply (UPS) *and* an auto failover pump.
