Careful if you're using a 3G, a TON of problems with them and iOS4, spoken from experience and a lost morning pouring over similar problems on the Apple boards

Just finished on a 3GS.

First thing that annoyed me was the wallpaper on the app screen. Turned that off.

Second thing that annoyed me was I couldn't figure out the 'multitasking'. Looked it up. Ya, it 'multitasks' every app that you launch and sticks it into a task manager which you bring up by quickly double tapping the home key.

So every application you launch gets stuck into this task manager and you have to manually get rid of it.. unless there is something I am missing again.

Multiple mailboxes, big deal. I only have one that I care about. Haven't seen it do threading yet.

Camera features, yup, it's got a 5x digital zoom, so now you can make your pictures extra grainy.

Folders was a nice touch. Just press and hold an app icon to get into jiggly-mode and then drag and drop one app icon onto another, and there, instant folder.

The one thing I would REALLY like as a feature is to turn off the shrink/expanding screens whenever you switch between stuff. That stupid delay of having to watch it draw just makes me crazy. Waste of time!

was gonna upgrade my 3G tonight..... what kind of problems are you seeing?

For me it was crashing programs, I couldn't get in to change the General Settings, the phone would crash, I ended up having to clear the phone, restore the update, manually re-enter all my email accounts and then sync my music. If I tried to restore my email accounts the phone would crash. But there seems to be a whole bunch of different problems as well, one of the articles I was reading:

http://www.tuaw.com/2010/06/21/ios-4-updating-woes-with-iphone-3g/

and a quick trip to the Apple support forums confirmed a ton of people with 3g's were having problems. Apparently the 3gs was unaffected.

I updated my 3G last night without issue. I haven't used it a ton since updating, but mail and my regular programs seem fine.

Go to settings, hit general, see if you can get in.

Yup - no problem - checked version number, etc on the about section of general. It actually asked me if I wanted to update my rogers settings as they have been updated to. Did it - no problems...

I guess I got lucky...

same thing with mine, no issues

It was only the 3G that had the problem not the 3GS which is what I believe you said you had...

because it's an updated software? What kind of question is that...

It fixes over 65 vulnerabilities that iPhone had... some added features as well (the big ones don't work on 3G, like multitasking)

I'm syncing/backing up my iPhone 3G in preparation to try and load the iOS 4 right now. Thanks for the link, Rob! Much appreciated.

Not sure if I will try to update first or restore though. I know everything is theoretically backed up, however, just the thought of erasing everything on my iPhone makes me extremely nervous! LOL

Oh, one question. Anyone know an easy way to save text messages? Sending page by page to an email address is very cumbersome and they don't get backed up automatically...

I'll let you all know how it turns out...

no.

3G, 3GS and iPhone 4 are all eligible for the update. If you have an older iPhone, it won't even let you download the update.

Some of the iPhone OS4 features will filter down to the 3G, but not multitasking.

I also heard it will run slow.

I have an Ipod touch v2 and I updated my iOS 4. The total update took about 2 hrs but that was because I haven't updated my ipod in awhile. For some reason I didn't even know that some of the features weren't available for use on my devise. Its too bad as Multitasking and backgrounds were features I was def going to use the most.

No big deal I'm just waiting for Iphone 4 to come out.

Has anyone been able to get out of the data contract from Rogers by paying $100 cancellation fee. Some RFD'ers have gotten the iphone with voice & data and then second month they cancel the data by paying $100...any truth to that...

I have iPhone without data plan from day one :) Never paid a single cent for it. This morning I called Rogers Retentions and they offered me pretty lucrative deal ... but I am waiting for iPhone 4 to come out before I can get locked into another contract ...

Basically the deal was:
300 DT mins + MY5 canada wide
Unlimited weekends and evenings starting @ 6pm
500 MB data plan
100 LD mins / month
2500 txt sent + unlimited receiving

unlimited incoming mins
caller id + voicemail

all for $52.58 + tax

I am on exact same plan with Rogers and pay $40.96/month all inclusive.
