Has anyone had to repaint their garage door yet?

If so please share what prep work you did. I have way too many hockey puck marks (OK Goals) on my door and I want to clean it up. I suspect this will become a yearly task.

Thanks
Matt

I have to try to match the color first, or try to find it referenced somewhere in my documentation.

Why did I let them shoot pucks on the driveway???

We repainted our garage twice last summer (didn't like the first colour.. oops!)
Nice hot day, drop cloth or tarp along the driveway / door line. Close the garage all the way..
All we did was wash down the door with a big sponge, let it dry and taped along the brick to avoid accidents and did it all with one roller and one medium sized brush. When you're done the first coat, we opened the garage about half way to catch any areas we missed along the edges / bottom, etc. Two coats should do it depending on your colour of course.
Turned out perfect!
Good luck!

Did you use primer at all? I am reading different opinions online...

They say if you are repainting exterior wood, use primer, I am not sure our garages are wood though....
Also said to block stains to prime. If I can't scrub the puck marks, I may just prime.

One of my to do projects, I did some research some time back and found the below links useful. If anyone does perform a faux wood finish please share your final product and tips:

Scrub with Vim to take the marks off. If that doesn't work you can try goof off (btw this stuff is great for removing stickers from things like skate boards, toys, cars...) . The Garage doors used in HV 13 is not wood it is some papery/cardboard sh*t with glue... Vista has even worst garage doors, I don't think mine will last long enough to worry about painting them. :x

I will try the Vim.

THe doors are cheap but have their advantages.

1. I can move my car up to the point I hit it and the door gives then I back up. Talk about squeezing tight to get 2 cars in the driveway
2. It is very light and no problems for my garage door opener and is very quiet
3. Most importantly, it allows my garage to hover around 2 degrees in the winter which is perfect for storing my beer

I painted mine a couple weeks ago. Two coats of exterior paint no primer.

if the Vim doesn't work, try a magic eraser ... those things are awesome :)

we had our garage painted recently by Straight Line painting - i think he disconnected the garage door opener and then painted one panel at a time raising it up to make sure he got the edges. it really does look a lot better with just a fresh coat of paint.

We painted our garage door last year before we sold. We got an exterior paint at Home Depot that was primer and paint in one. Worked great and looked good.

Good point Lolabug. THere are a lot of new products out there that contain primer in the paint. This would probably be your best choice. We have bought this product from Home Depot before at it was great.

As for colour: I vote for that bright Mediterranean blue that you see on some of the houses in Mississauga  (unless you are my neighbour then just repaint it the same colour it already is!!!!)
