I'm not really in tune with this kind of stuff, and I know a lot of you on here know your stuff.

If I only do my laundry on the weekends, and run the dishwasher after 10pm, am I saving much??

With three kids and a husband my laundry piles up quick and I try hard to stretch it out till Saturday Is it worth it?

Cheap time is after 9pm and before 7am. I run the dishwasher after 9 and also put on a load of laundry after 9pm then in the dryer before bed. I'm also up at 5am so sometimes do laundry then. I too tried waiting till the weekend but no can do in my household. My hydro bill is still over $300 so I can only imagine if I did it any other way

Not true. Ideally you leave the lights on 24x7, but you can turn them off for 8 hours a day if you like (just grow a little slower). Do this during peak hours, and Dalton McGuinty will tell the cops to let it slide.

I wish I had something to show for it but nope:( I am in rural Milton and do have a barn and shop but there are no lights or heaters on this time of year...We only got our smart metre in July and I hate it already..

I say watch the dollars. They're 100x more important than the pennies.


To answer your question:

ENERGY STAR dishwasher including electricity to heat water are cost $0.36 per load based on $0.15 cents/KWh (from a govt website.)
Milton charges less than that, 9.9 cents peak, 8.0 mid-peak, 5.3 cents off-peak, so that's:
24 cents to run a load during peak times
19 cents to run a load in the evening, and
13 cents to run a load overnight.

You're saving 6 cents by running it overnight vs in the evening after dinner. Assuming 2 loads per week, you can save a whopping 6 dollars in a year by being a slave to the clock. My wife loves the timer, but if I want to put the dishes away before bed instead of doing it in the morning or the next day knowing I have a hectic schedule ahead, the 6 cents doesn't factor into my decision at all.

I'd rather save dollars by turning off the heat dry option when I don't need it.

Washers and dryers - different story.

My washer has a timer option, but the dryer doesn't. (??)
So if I time my washer to start at off peak hours, it'll be clean when I'm in bed, and sit there all moist and getting smelly, forcing me to do another rinse in the morning, ruining the very savings I acheived the night before.
If my dryer has a timer, there would be wet clothes sitting in there waiting to start, against, getting smelly from the dampness, so I would save a few cents at the cost of potentially having to wash everything again.

So what you're saying is that an appliance company needs to step up to the plate and design an interlocking washer/dryer combo that opens a dividing gate between the two and pushes the wet clothes into the dryer once the wash cycle is completed.

A gas dryer is 30% cheaper to run than an electric one yet they both cost almost the same when buying new

Here is the Time of Use Rates for Ontario - You will save a considerable amount of money if you run your dishwasher and do laundry on weekends and holidays or at night b/t 9pm to 7am.

Mine just came in - with Hydro it was $335. ($110 of water in there)

All depends on the size of your house, if you cool it with A/C, etc. I cannot stand being hot at night, so I've had the A/C on all summer.

My typical bill in the winter without A/C is about $125ish.

I figure it this way, Gas is high in the winter, electricity in the summer. Budget for the same amount every month total for both services, since it pretty much ends up being that way...

They're pretty common in the UK where people don't have basements or room for separates.
