I use monoprice as well.

3 weeks ago I was at Leon's and was looking at TV's.

I told the guy I was not interested in 240mhz since I hear the picture is crappy. He told me that you are using the wrong HDMI cable. There are different speeds or throught puts of HDMI cables. 10 Gigabit I thought was standard but he told me there is faster ones (and showed me) that can accomodate the 240mhz speed.
Soooo, is this BS or can someone comment on the different speeds in relation to price?

Thanks
Matt

Well there are different versions of the 1.3 HDMI standard as well as the new 1.4 standard.

However, even the first version of 1.3 supports 340MHz, so I don't see it as the issue with 240MHz sets unless you were using a 1.2 or less cable.

If you don't want to wait for shipping... this place usually has it on sale (6ft should be $5 bucks or so when it is on sale).

Try the shops on Matheson, just west of dixie.

AA Electronics
Sayal
RTC Electronics

prices vary, but much better than a big box store.

Just curious if it really makes a difference in picture quality if I buy a cheapy $16 HDMI cable from Walmart or the $60+ cable you find at electronics stores? I need to get a new one and want to know if it's worth paying the extra money or are all HDMI cables really the same? Thanks.

My friend in Oakville was in same dilemma last year. He was looking for long one. He ended up ordering one across the border. It appears they have huge difference in the price for this kind of cables.

i'll just chime in....

There are a few differences between the cables. Mostly just the mark up... which everyone have spoken about. I use to sell Monster cables, I would buy an HDMI cable for $26 and sell it for $89.

Another difference is the quality of the actual cable. If you will be unplugging, and plugging the cable in on a regular basis, you are better off getting a "brand name" cable. The solder joints are better, and usually it's a better copper for wrapping the cable up. Some people need to feel they are getting a quality cable. Which they are.... but it like buying a car, an expensive car, and a cheap car can go 120 km/h ... it just depends on what else your going to do with the car that makes you decide on which one is for you.

I agree with this, I've outfitted my entire house with no-name stuff from monoprice, BUT there is a hole in the CBC story.

The tech measured the signal coming out of a DVD player. As we all know, DVD players are NOT HD and only output at 480p max.
A better test would have been from a blu-ray, with a full 1080p disc.

Wyl, good point on the how-you-use-it, but I don't imagine there are very many people who beat up their cables, and unplug them every day. Component 1 connects to TV, cable gets tucked behind and collects dust. That's 99% of people I'd imagine.

Thanks everyone. I ended up buying the $16, 12 footer from wal-mart and it works great. I got the HD package now and it looks amazing. Glad I didn't pay $60+ for the 'better' cables.

99% is not true anymore. I plug and unplug in my laptop, and camcorder all the time into my plasma with my HDMI cable. Then I wrap it up and hide it so my wife doesn't get upset that I am leaving cables around.

Actually, there are over 6,000 users on this site, so until you find me 59 more people, I'm still right ;)

j/k
