A cyclist is in hospital after she was struck while biking along a stretch of road near Milton.

Police say around 7:15 p.m. on Saturday, a 53-year-old woman was cycling along Derry Rd. The woman was biking east and approaching an intersection when she was hit by a vehicle.

Police say the woman was knocked from her bike, but the driver failed to stop and the woman was left by the side of the road until a passing motorist stopped to help. The woman was taken to hospital with injuries.

Police say they are looking for the driver of a Ford F-150.

Hope she'll be okay and they find the loser. It's dark by that time now. Not sure why she'd be out biking in this area at night with the type of drivers in this town.

Obviously I have no idea where exactly this happened, but I have been driving my daughter to burlington a couple times each week and are often coming back along Derry from Tremain and often come up behind bicycles. They are usually wearing all black and have minimal or no reflective stuff on them or the bike. It has gotten so bad, that we now avoid Derry rd.

I too hope the woman is okay. I both drive Derry often and cycle from Milton to Mississauga once a week. I have to say from a cyclist's point of view there are very few bad drivers but one is enough to make for a bad experience.

Let me try to understand this. You avoid driving along Derry because you are afraid of hitting a cyclist? Maybe you should quit driving in your subdivision because kids may be playing road hockey on the street or someone may be J-walking.....

Hey Kamato

Off your high horse for a minute. Daycaremom is obviously concerned that she COULD hit someone. If she feels that the best way for her not to is to avoid a potential trouble spot, so be it. There are lots of shadows on Derry road that can hide cyclists!

On the flip side, may be the cyclists should take advantage of the bike path beside the road so they don't get hit. That's why there there in the first place. Derry Road is an arterial(Read heavy traffic) roadway.

Yeah, it's definitely the woman's fault, eh?

Sometimes it is... I, by no means, am judging the situation as I posted this hoping the person who failed to stop at the scene can be recognized.

But, sometimes, a few are risk takers by riding down one lane streets like Britannia and swing into the oncoming traffic making it hard for drivers to pass.

Get off my high horse? I could go out and hit someone every day of my life, but I dont avoid driving to and from where I need to go or avoid the most convenient road to get there? I hate driving the 401, with all the trucks, but guess what, I still do it. I've seen a hit an run on Derry in front of the golf corse near 5th line. Yes, the douche drove off, luckily someone got the guys liscence plate number. It was dark (after 11pm) and it was a 65 year old riding the bike, and guess what, he was dressed all in dark clothes, with nothing reflective.

Not what I said at all.
If you know that stretch of Derry out there West of the homes in the escarpment - there is no lighting and it's very dark. Since I have come up behind cyclists in this area in the dark and they are almost on my bumper before I can see them, I decided to take another route. I would rather not hit someone out there no matter who you think would be responsible.

If you can not stop or slow down because of cyclist in front of you, daytime or at night, maybe you should consider giving up your licence; seriously. If you can not handle the hazards and obstacles of our roadways, maybe you should just stay off them. Maybe you need to have your eyes checked or slow down. I have never encountered a bicyclist at night (even without reflectors) who I have not been able to see through my headlights.

Having read these forums, you should know by now that if a cyclist encounters a car, then the cyclist was asking for it. I imagine some upstanding citizen was driving at the speed limit when the cyclist darted in front and caused him to run her over. To avoid a scandal which would traumatize the community, the driver quickly left the scene... it is not like he was a paramedic or anything anyway so what help would he have been?

100% agree. Even if she was in all black and painted her bike black and had zero reflection, you stop when you hit someone!

The assumptions people make when they have zero information is just amazing.
