We had it installed both times. First time super awesome no complaints.
2nd time, we haven't actually activated it yet :) But it's there for whenever we actually get around to it, hopefully soon.

Just get the sticker. Alarms don't actually trigger for the first 45 seconds, after that the alarm company waits before they call you to confirm if its simply a mistake. Then at least 5 mins goes by before the call into the police, and at that point it's still a low priority due to the volume of false alarms. The call sits on the screen in a cruiser for 20-40 mins. Most break-ins are kids and they are in and out in less than a couple minutes. They no exactly what they are looking for and are not going to waste time sitting in the house. By the time anyone arrives they are loooonnnngggng gone.

Waste of money in my opinion, and the police would agree.

We have one but didn't go through Mattamy. Deluxe alarms. Is it a waste? I'm thinking of not renewing once the contract is up. The only thing that its done for me so far, is notify me if my little one has opened a door or window. I think the best thing for protecting your home is a nice large dog :D

I would agree mostly with the "skip it" since we did with our first mattamy build 2 years ago- it was just a standard system.


but for our new home we went with it

the new generation system mattamy is offering has a 7" video monitor which allows you to not only talk to people at your door, but also see them- Very handy.

This is installed very discreetly and clean obviously near your kitchen in stanless steel with black accents- a very nice look which IMO would be a selling feature.

I recomend it !

The system Mattamy sells through Reliance is $27/month (plus hst), locked in a 3 year contract, after which all the equipment is yours. No cost to install or purchase any equipment. The total over the 3 years will be $1098. That includes the video camera built into the doorbell, a video screen installed, a two way intercom, a motion sensor, door and window contacts on the main and basement levels, and a monitored smoke detector.

We bought it (our house closes in a few months). We didn't plan on it, but thought it was pretty cool once we saw it in action.

The hubby often works quite late, so we were going to buy a security camera for the front door and an audible unmonitored alarm anyhow - which would have cost *at least* $600. So we really didn't think that the $1100 was a rip-off for a monitored, more comprehensive system (installed). And my friend's sister works for Reliance (and she works for ADT herself), and both said that the $27/month is really a great price.

Yeah. Mecel is trying to upsell you a cellular transmitter for $199 + $10/month for the cellular plan.

Really, all you need is the regular phone-line based monitoring and wire it into your voip connection. Lots of people already do this. It works.

After you move in, get your voip system running and make sure you've got it connected in the basement inside your demarc point (not just in a bedroom next to your computer). Then call Mecel to come and hook up your security. The voip line looks exactly like a phone line at that point so they can hook it up to the "phone line" as usual. Done.

If your house has all the phone jacks hooked up in parallel, which seems to be the way things are done by the builders (it's cheaper, etc), then all you need to do is to connect your italkBB adapter to the closest phone jack. At that point all your other jacks should be "live". The only caveat being that you should make sure that where your phone line comes into the house (in the basement) it is disconnected - this last step is important (i.e. you want to break the connection of your internal phone wires with the outside world - instead, they are connected by the one cable from your italkBB adapter into the phone jack).

Once you have a voip phone line installed, your security system taps into that and frankly it doesn't have any clue about who your voip provider and/or internet service provider is. It doesn't matter. When the security system picks up the phone, it gets a dial tone. That's all it needs.

You're right, that's an important point. The security company will install their own comm box usually at your electrical panel that takes the phone line coming from outside (demarc) as input, then as an output it feeds the rest of your house. With a voip provider, you need to take the signal coming out of your voip box and tie it into the input of the security comm box.

This will allow the security system to override and take control of your voip phone line regardless of what anyone does with a handset in the rest of your house.

The best place for all of these devices is in the basement (cable/dsl modems, voip boxes, routers, etc). That gives you the flexibility to connect everything in one convenient place.

fyi for anyone who has the video system through mecel they had a batch of defective units are in receiving new ones any day. The video panel will just start beeping non stop on it's own.

We had an alarm for all our past homes until we moved into our present older home. Now I'd never bother with one again.

I have a security system and I love it. I do not have the system for "burglars". I feel if a "good burglar" wants in they will get in, no matter what system you have. If it's a "shitty burglar" want's in, what are they going to take a "TV" no biggy... As long as I am not home, it's all good.

I have a security system for my own families security, I have a system that charms when any exterior door in my home opens. This tells me if my child has opened an exterior door in my home. I can alarm the system when a taking a shower, dry my hair and know that my child is still in the house. When I sleep at night, if my child sleepwalks she can not open the front door cause my alarm will go off and wake us up. This is why I have a system and for these reason I love it.

I do not like the system that Alarm Force offers because they do not alarm all the doors to the home. They only alarm one door and relay on motion sensors. And I don't like the big bulky box you have to hide in the center of your home.
Reliance system alarms all exterior doors and use's motion sensors, they have a small battery that is installed in your basement by your electrical panel.

I just found out that Costco offers Home Security Installation and protection through Reliance, for a fraction of the price as complared with Mattamy. They've actually got a sale on right now too! Go to Costco.ca and search home security, you'll see the options they have. The larger option looks like it includes monitoring for 3 years as well!

For those of you that have had yours installed post close, have you run into any installation issues? I.e. does it look fairly clean? or can you see the contacts? (this is my only concern).
