Hi Guys,

I'm not from your phase but I was looking at the map and noticed a trend in the street names...seem to be last names of famous people...

Burgess Garden - Isn't there a famous Burgess??
Hepburn Road - Audrey Hepburn
Jackman Gate - Hugh Jackman
McEwan Drive - Ian McEwan
Gifford Cresent - Kathie Lee Gifford

omg! That's so funny.
I thought it was families that have been in Milton for a long time but the famous people thing works too. Isn't there someone named Meredith Burgess who is famous?

My friend lives in a subdivision where everything is named after boat stuff (Mariner Way, Harbour View Drive. . .)

I've also seen types of birds and types of trees used a lot. . .

I guess they are trying to be different.

How about Michael Burgess, who often sings O Canada at Leafs games? A very GQ-looking guy:

Zelinsky sounds Ukrainian, and those living on Gifford can maybe bust out a big-screen and play old re-runs of Regis and Cathy next summer at a block party.

Actually Zelinsky is named after Betty Zelinsky a former Citizen of the Year in Town. Hepburn is named after Mitch Hepburn Ontario Premier in the 1940s. Check out the Town web site milton.ca for the Name Bank and you can see where the names come from and submit your own ideas as the Town is going to need hundreds of names for new streets, parks and facilities over the next 20 years (check out the Sherwood and Boyne survey maps)

Hi Michelle
Sorry but Gifford is even before my time, probably a local family name or councillor. Most of the names in Coates Crossing are from former Citizens of the Year and Councillors.
ie. Lingen cr. Paul Lingen former citizen of year. Philbrook Dr. after Frank Philbrook former Halton MP. from 1974-79.
Check out the 1877 atlas, Milton area Biographies and Historical Society publications at the Library or Harris Stationary on Main St. Found out that Bessy Trail is named after a farm family that is highlighted in the 1877 atlas showing a drawing of their farm and lot.

I have also noticed Slessor (Slessor Motors), Chudliegh ( farm & MP), Edwards (Dr in town- dont think he practices still though) Tonelli (Hockey player from town)

Nice to see old town names being used... keeping the old in with the new

Hi Michelle
Found out the history of the name Gifford Crescent. It is named after John Gifford a World War One veteran who enlisted in 1916. Ed Goodall of the Historical Society has more information in a new book the Society is launching soon. Visit Waldie's blacksmith shop on James Street off Main Street next to St. Paul's Church. The Society has a calender launch today for their 150th anniversary year in 2007. You can also buy it and other books at Harris Stationary on Main Street.
More to come later. Also the Town has a name bank on their web site milton.ca where you can submit your own ideas for names for streets, parks, trails and facilities.
