Hi all

Here is a short list of the latest street name questions.

For Kevin & Amanda, Van Fleet Terrace is named after a long time family who farmed in the Esquesing Township and still has several family members in the area who suggested the name through the Name Bank application form found at www.milton.ca. You can see some photos of family members in the book Halton's Scotch Block page 82.

For Mandy, Zuest Crescent is named after the Zuest family who farmed on Steeles Avenue just east of Bell School Line for several generations and still has family members on part of the old farm who are active in the community. I went to school with several members of the family as their farm was close to my family's farm.

For Richardv, Pringle Avenue is named after C.H. Pringle a World War One veteran who served in the 164th Battalion from Milton and a reference about him can be found on page 192 of the Milton Historical Society book Milton Remembers World War 1 which also has a number of references to other new street named after veterans of both wars.

For Hawthorne5c, still working on Minchin Way I have not found a reference in any of the local books or the 1877 Atlas which records the name of the owner of every farm in Halton at the time. Will post as soon as I find out.

Hi Colin,

Thanks for all the info. What about Peregrine Way? I'm hoping it's after the falcon...that's what comes up in Google anyway....

Hi Hawthorne5c

Sorry for the delay. Anne Fisher the Town Planner responsible for heritage planning checked the name Minchin Way and it was suggested by the Milton Historical Society to honour Captain John Minchin who served in World Ward 1 and died in 1915. He is mentioned in a Champion article in 1902 but is not listed in the Historical Society's books.

Peregrine Way is named after the bird as staff and I could not find any family name related to it. This could have been a builder recommendation as some builders try to have themed neighbourhoods to make it easier for people to remember the streets.

The Dorset Park area of Milton which was built in the 1970s has four themes for local family's ie. Joyce, Elliott, trees ie. Willow, Maple, explorers Cabot, Frobisher, and historical figures Churchill, Mac Donald etc.

If you have a name or family member you want to recommend for a street name or park/facility please fill out the attached form from the Town website as there will be a need for a number of names for the new Boyne Survey which council has now authorized staff to negotiate with the area builders for construction in 2013-2021.

How 'bout Speyer Circle and Monaghan Crescent?

I'd love to live on "Cupcake Way"

Hi Nancy & Chris

Sorry for the delay, had a number of local & regional council meetings this week.

Grenke place is named after the Grenke family who have been involved in the Milton community for a number of decades. Vern Grenke was a World War two veteran who's photo can be seen in the Milton Historical Society book Milton Remembers WWII on page 121.

Cupcakemommies I could not find any reference to the name Speyer but it may have some reference to a local family that founded the hamlet of Speyside on Regional Road #25 halfway between Milton and Acton.

Monaghan Cr. is named after the county in Ireland that many early Milton residents came from. You might also note that the rural clusters of Boyne, Omagh and Drumquin are named after places in Ireland.

Not sure about Cupcake Way though as there is already over 300 names on the list for future streets, parks and facilities but you can try!

Hi Monika and Mike

Higginbotham is named after Mayor Alfred Higginbotham who was the Town Mayor in 1905-06 and 1911 and Reeve in 1907 and a Town Councillor in 1901, 1903-04. This is when council's were only elected for one year terms.

You can see a photo of him and his council on the second floor of the Town Hall just outside of the Council Chamber and also in the Fallingbrook room along with all the other Mayors of the town since 1857.

Hi Noor

Ruhl Drive is named after the Ruhl family who owned the farm that many of the homes on Ruhl and Brassard (named after a former Fire Chief) are located. You can visit Mr. & Mrs. Ruhl who still live in the big farm house at the top of the hill east of Bronte.

The remainder of the farm is being deeded to the Town for a park and school site off of Farmstead Drive with town staff working on plans for other uses for the house and barns after the Ruhl's who have been very involved in the community for many decades move out of the house.

Hi Momto4

Wettlaufer Terrace is named after the Wettlaufer family who are long time farmers in the area and have been involved in a number of community groups such as the Halton Agricultural Society as board members and a former president.

http://www.miltonfair.com/

You can also visit the family farm on #2 Sideroad in Burlington off Appleby Line and meet some of the family to hear more of their family history in the area.

Many of the area streets and neighbourhoods such as Scott, Harrison, Willmott, Coates and Beaty are named after the original farm families, as well as veterans and councillors. I have had the honour of serving with many of the individuals and families who these streets are named after, and know they would be pleased to hear you have been researching the history of Milton and their contributions.

Check out the 1877 Atlas and other Milton Historical Society books for other names and history of the area at the Waldie Blacksmith shop on James St. next to St. Pauls Unted Church.

Great thread, I have looked through it previously to find out about my street. It is a good wealth of knowledge but sometimes seems like you will always have to spell out your street name when giving it for things ;)

I have had to do that previously for my parents place growing up so nothing new to me.

Living on Leiterman Drive.

Hi Pilothaz

Thanks for the inquiry. I could not find any reference to Leiterman in the Milton Historail Society books or the 1877 Atlas for the area were many of the street names come from.

I have asked Anne Fisher who is the planning staff person involving with Name Bank recommendations to find where the name came from.

I remember finding a pdf somewhere for the nominations of street names. He was a local from Milton. I will have to dig it up again.

Update: Just found it again... The information I was looking at was from the Walk Of Fame...
http://www.milton.ca/townwide/walk_fame.pdf

Here is the Informatoin on Douglas Leiterman and he was inducted in 2007:
Quote:
A major creative talent of the 1960s, Douglas Leiterman, in partnership with Patrick Watson, created and produced the CBC’s seminal public affairs program This Hour Has Seven Days, which has repeatedly been cited as the most exciting and innovative public affairs series of its kind in the history
of Canadian television. Mr. Leiterman also founded Wired City Communications and Motion
Picture Bond Company and wrote and hosted the initial years of CBC's The Passionate Eye. Mr. Leiterman enlisted in the Canadian Merchant Navy in April 1945, assigned to SS Albertolite on the tanker run to Venezuela, and was discharged in September 1945.
