Our neighbors are celebrating Ramadam so they've been up really late the past few nights (hence my late posting...lol).

I guess they don't have to work tomorrow morning like regular people

Regular people work jobs that aren't 9-5 too just FYI.

When this happened to us, my husband and I went outside with my kids light sabers and started making lots and lots of noise (around 11:30pm)
When the neighbors asked us what we were doing, we told them we were practicing to be Jedi's (we get most of our "piss off our neighbor" ideas from Family Guy)
They had stunned looks on their faces and walked away to never look back. :D

My personal opinion, I would have put in my ear plugs gone to bed and tried to get the best night sleep possible, but I would have been up at 6:00 in the morning washing all my pots and pans right outside their bedroom windows while blaring the Metallica black album and letting the kids yell and scream all they want.

Great idea, that's the best way to get the message across. :D

Would you choose the black album because it's your favorite album to rock out to, or because it marks the moment when the band sold out and started making really crappy music?

I don't begrudge them for selling out, but make no mistake, they did sell out. They turned into a hard rock band to get radio play, and as a result, a tonne more money. I can understand that and good for them.

They built up a huge following with absolutely no radio play (which is quite impressive) with their first 4 albums and after years of hard work, death, members being kicked out and being nicknamed "alcoholica", they decided it was time to cash in.

When 102.1 The Edge plays Metallica, something has gone wrong.

Whenever people talk about bands selling out I always thing of "Hooker with a penis" by Tool.

I, met a boy, wearing Vans, 501s, and a
Dope beastie-tee, nipple rings,
New tattoos that claim that he
Was OGT,
back in '92,
from the first EP.

And in between
Sips of Coke
He told me that
He thought
We were sellin' out,
Layin' down,
Suckin' up
To the man.

Well now I've got some
Advice for you, little buddy.
Before you point your finger
You should know that
I'm the man,

And if I'm the man,

Then you're the man, and
He's the man as well so you can
Point that f***' finger up your ass.

All you know about me is what I've sold you,
Dumb f**K.
I sold out long before you ever even heard my name.

I sold my soul to make a record,
Dip sh*t,
And then you bought one.

All you read and
Wear or see and

Shut up and

Buy, buy, buy, my new record
Buy, buy, buy, send more money
f**K you, buddy.
f**K you, buddy.

f**K you, buddy.

Yeah, I'm familiar with it, and while I'm no Tool aficionado, I'm not aware of an about face in their music style like Metallica had to bring on the sell out comments. So if a Tool fan is upset about a record deal they signed, then bully for them. ( I first saw them on the secondary stage at lollapalooza back in 91? 92? just after their EP, which is fantastic)

And I understand that everything that we look, listen, kneel and pray to has been wrapped up and sold to us by someone looking to profit, but it does not change the fact that we get attached to the ideal that they are selling us and when that ideal changes, we have a right to be upset about it. Even if it doesn't matter

Tool is on 102.1 as well. Probably 8 times a day I'd bet.

Yeah, I agree. I'd also argue that a lot of Tool's music was suitable for 102.1 right from Undertow (their first full album) and on. Metallica's was not. So I see a bit of a difference there.

I suppose its fair game if you want to say that Metallica matured in their music writing skills to the point that they started to write music that is played during "the blanket song" during a set at the strip club, but I'll respectfully disagree with that and stick to the sell out theory, whose ever idea it was.

Batman wrote:
Every bands style changes if they last long enough and a lot of them actually get better, despite 'fans' claiming they are now worse. When you attach yourself to an unknown band as a big fan, you acquire a feeling of exclusivity and a sense of belonging to something new and unique. Once the band becomes mainstream many people lose that special attachment because they have to share it now with a million other people and it doesn't 'feel' so special anymore. So they tend to get upset at the band for becoming popular.

That sounds like an argument saying Metallica is producing better music now than in the mid to late 80's?

I would much rather check out a metallica cover band at the HardBall (which I HAVE and it was AWESOME), than see Metallica live today.
They have no anger left in them.
No more edge.
No unique sound anymore..
Or should I say.. any-moorrr-horrrrrRRR--AH!
There are 1 or 2 songs in the last maybe 40 recorded with the speed, riffs, and edge that we all fell in love with in the 80s.
Yes the Black album was fine for making out in the back seat or the car, cooking brunch, or for getting radio play, but nothing will ever match the sheer musical skill employed on their earlier work.

It has nothing to do with exclusivity, since I was late to the party. I only started listening to the original stuff in the early 90s, and never felt part of any 'fan' club (nor did I have the hair to pull it off (OBVIOUS). It was just great, hard, angry, yet harmonically perfect music... with a kick ass double bass going at the speed of light.

Martin, you were at palooza in 91? I don't peg you as the palooza type - cool!

Don't tell anyone, but the dude in that avatar is not really me ;) I just found him on the net in an avatar search.

As for Heavy T.O, I considered it, but I'll be honest and say that I'm not as up to date on the metal scene as I once was; meaning I've not heard of a lot of those bands in the lineup. So had the concert taken place on one day instead of two and I could go see Slayer (one more time), Megadeth, Anthrax and Rob Zombie all in one sitting, I'd have gone.

Splitting them over 2 days was dirty pool in my eyes.
