I install Garage Door Openers in all the new Milton subdivisions, and out of the 4 builders I have covered, the Mattamy ones were very very very thin. Based on the one I saw, it's a thin sheet of particle board, and then essentially pressed paper overtop of that.

The door is very light, but provides pretty much zero insulation.

Other builders (Coscorp, Falconcrest, Tiffpark) have all used a thicker wood (pine?) doors with plexiglass windows along the top. Pretty nice.

So decide what you need for yourself. A garage that remains a little warmer in the winter? Think about what you may be storing in there.

Hi there,
Does any one have any suggestions between the standard clad wood garage doors and the upgraded steel insulated garage door . The upgrade price to the steel version is $973

Are there any disadvantages to having a standard clad wood garage door

thanks
Dennis

What you have to keep in mind is for what garage door you would be upgrading...

The main door for the car to come in, or the door from the garage to the house.

I asked our sales rep this and it is for the internal door to the garage.

I believe the only advantage was choice of preference.

In Home Depot this week they are selling 7' x 9' garage Door Insulated Blanket for $49.84 and 16' Garage Door Bottom Draft Seal for $19.84.

Sounds interesting.

Excellent.. Just make sure the kids don't put the hockey net up against the garage door, and you are all set!

I assume that the blanket is for the roll up garage doors?? not sure if they even make swing out any more.

I have a Bedroom above my garage and want to do what I can to minimize Mr. Winter.

Thanks

Matt

Hi Matt,

We heard so many horror stories about the
"COLD ROOM" about the garage and watched
Holm on homes that we decided to go with the
foam insullation.
and we also bought the blanket for the outside garage door.

hopefully it will minimize the "cold room Syndrom"

Sandra

You mean the blue foam insulation and nailing it to the ceiling of the garage?

Well, I have a bedroom 2/3 above the garage and it is actually the warmest room in the house.

There's extra inslation between the garage ceiling and the room floor, as per building code.

Blue spray foam...it is a Mattamy upgrade, but they don't mention it, but they have prices for it very handy.

Yes, the blanket is for the roll up doors. But I don't see why you can't use it on the other swing doors.

I am buying what I can for the house now so that when the time comes I won't have to look for money.

Can anyone verify if this is the garage door that we get?

I saw this in a couple of houses, but can't confirm the front style.

I cannot tell what is in the top row. Usually the standard Mattamy houses have the small windows with plastic trim around them.

The rest of the door looks like the standard cardboard :)

These look like very flimsy wood garage doors.

I wonder how good they are for keeping the cold out?

I don't think the standard doors have an R rating at all. For a comparative (because I'm not sure of Mattamy's upgraded door specs), we had a large garage door in our current house replaced with an aluminum door, insulated to R12, for $1000. If we wanted the R16 door, it would have been another $250 or so. The difference between our builder's door and the R12 was amazing. The standard doors that mattamy puts on will keep the wind out (at best) but not the cold at all.

Thanks for the tip Greg!! Now I know where to keep my beer in the winter since we did not get the cold cellar!!!

It si true that the garage doors don't ahve any insulation, but they do keep the cold out. From experience (last winter) even at the coldest days, the inside of the garage wasn't that cold, wosn't warm enough to live there but if I had to stay there for 20 - 30 minutes I did not need to put on any additional cothes (my indoor temp in winter time is set to 22C). And it makes a huge difference if you put the car in at night (no remote starter here).
