Sorry but we feel very strongly that if Milton streets are to be named after veterans, they should be named after Milton veterans who made the supreme sacrifice and did not return to our town from the wars.

Doesn't sit right with us that streets are named randomly after returning soldiers because their families were prominent and/or had political persuasion and possibly some that never served in a war zone e.g. Pringle Avenue named after Charles Henry Pringle who returned home and may never have set foot in France or Belgium.

There were 79 soldiers who did not return home to Milton from World War One and almost a similiar number from the Second World War. The naming of vetaran named streets should be after those that never returned.

Cheers
Bob

I disagree.

You can have a street named after you for being a politician or a volunteer or even an entertainer (which is all cool with me -- I like it that our streets reflect our local's history). So are you suggesting that returning war vets don't rate up there with entertainers or politicians? I don't get why the standard should be no street names for war veterans unless they died in battle?

If your point is that those who sacrificed their lives for Canada should ALL be remembered via a street name, I can totally get behind that.

Why don't some Legion volunteers submit their names? Problem solved.

Thanks Miltonleo

Actually the Milton branch of the legion has submitted a number of names of veterans who either were killed in action or returned home. Here is the latest addition to the list of names approved by council for streets and facilities many of which are veterans.

http://www.milton.ca/execserv/agendas20 ... 0Names.pdf

You can also submit a name for consideration through the online application forms at www.milton.ca under name bank.

Colin I am in absolute awe of your ability to locate and/or determine the historical implications of each street name mentioned. Your knowledge base and/or resourcefulness is phenomenal.

I am moving into a new house to be built on Syndenham Lane ... any historical implications there?

Thanks Dan

As a former chair of the Heritage Milton committee (formerly known as LACAC) I have been involved with historical issues for a long time and work with the Milton Historical Society. I have also been honoured to work with a number of veterans, local politicians, citizens of the year and families who these streets have been named after.

I could not find who Syndenham Lane is named after but will check with Anne Fisher the town planner who works with the Heritage Milton committee to find out.

Burrcold, Leitch Landing is named after Mr. Fred Leitch a long time lawyer for the town who represented the Town in the 1970s and 1980s on a number of cases including the Site F landfill hearing at the north-west corner of Tremaine and Britannia road which the Town won. Ironically this site which the region wanted to put a landfill site on is now the Milton Education Village area.

You can find out more information on Milton area street names at:

Great thread, and great info, I feel like I'm getting in touch with the history of the town! Any information on Tyrone Crescent?

Hi Dan

Here is the answer to your question from Anne Fisher the Town planner.

Good afternoon Cllr. Best,

Syndenham Lane was named after Lord Syndenham – the Governor General from 1839-1840. I have attached below the Wikipedia link to him.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Po ... n_Sydenham

Regards
Anne

I am working on Tyrone and Solomon at present and should have some answers tomorrow.

Hi Andrew & Andrea and djarian

Here is some answers from Anne Fisher regarding both Solomon Court and Tyrone.

Solomon is after Solomon Hannant Sr. Milton Councillor – 1873- 74, 1883-4, Mayor 1884-87 &
Solomon Hannant, Milton Councillor 1892.

Tyrone is after the County in N. Ireland where the Ford family originated. They were a prominent Trafalgar pioneering family.

Anne

Many of the first settlers in the former Trafalgar Township area which is bordered by Steeles Avenue to the North, Dundas St. to the south. Tremaine road to the west and 9th line to the east came from Ireland hence the number of place and county names for streets and hamlets such as Drumquin, Omagh and the Boyne.

The Ford family still farms in the area on the 5th line at Britannia and one of the new neighbourhoods in the Phase 3 Boyne survey is named Ford after them similar to the Beaty, Clark, Coates. Willmott, Harrison and Scott neighbourhoods after the families who first farmed those areas.

Milton council last night approved the name Murray Meadows after the Murray family a long time active family in the community.

Colin, is there some sort of archive these people can google to find this stuff up?? Your poor wife must be ready to divorce you while you spend all this extra time researching street names while they all sit on their couches eating bonbons and watching reality shows and dancing with the stars.
Just a shot in the dark, but I'm guessing being a councillor just might be a full time job on its own. If you don't mind this stuff then you're a way better man than me. When my kids ask me something that they can research, I tell them to research it. Be kind of hippocritical if I turned around and asked you to find out something that I'm to busy or lazy to find out for myself. But that's just me.

Hi savard1234

Thanks for the comments. Yes there is a list of street names with some background to them at www.milton.ca just type in Name Bank at the site search icon which shows you most of the names and their history.

You can also contact Anne Fisher the Town heritage planner at 905-878-7252 or email her a question at anne.fisher@milton.ca which I do when I cannot find the name someone is looking for through the Milton Historical Society books, the 1877 Halton Atlas, and my own recollections. The new Halton history book by John Mac Donald would be a great gift for your family as it has the history of all the Halton area place names and some of their background.

Here is a list of recommended names which staff review before naming new streets.

http://www.milton.ca/MeetingDocuments/C ... 0Names.pdf

Also I have lived all my life in Milton and know many of the individuals and families named for these streets either through their service to the community or country as a veteran, councillor, citizen of the year, distinguished citizens, farming families, local MP's, MPP's, premiers, prime ministers, lieutenant and governor generals.

The Town has maintained a policy since the 1970s to name streets and facilities after people who have contributed to the community and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.

ps. none of the councillors in Milton area full time, only the Mayor is. We all work full time jobs in addition to our council work, no different than many volunteers in the community.

Well then, kudos to you all. Milton has become a very "needy" community, lot of work to try and satisfy the folk around here.
