quick question. my canon rebel xsi stopped taking pics with the autofocus last night. but takes pics fine with manual setting. looked online and it may be related to the outer focus ring being stuck, but it doesnt feel stuck. anyone encounter this before?

This exact same thing happened to my Rebel after I dropped it in my boat. Auto focus still works to a point, but gets stuck at certain points and I have to switch to manual. It is just the stock lens though, so I didn't really care enough to fix it or get a replacement.

No setting in Rebels to disable AF, at least not on Tli we have at home.
It is only AF/MF switch on lens.
Go to the store, Walmart or BestBuy and ask them to try another lens.
If store lens works it is time to replace yours.

Going to Best Buy was your first mistake! A UV filter won't have a noticeable effect on your photos, and it's cheaper to replace a scratched filter than a scratched lens.... That being said, get a lens cap. Canada Computers in Mississauga is the cheapest place locally to get one. Henrys or Vistek will have them. I usually order them online, they are so cheap, I order 4 or 5 just so I have extraas kicking around. Unfortunately I don't have extra 52mm, only bigger, otherwise I'd give you one.

No stay away from aftermarket batteries.. they don't last long and die suddenly (mid shutter flap). It can be dangerous.

There's a massive Red Tail Hawk outside my house right now, I'm going to try to capture it... with my camera.

Thanks for the help guys.

Update:

Bought a new Rebel T3 or something like that, used the new lens on the old camera and it works perfectly, so its definitely the lens. Might just throw out the old one or try to clean the brass connectors that may be dirty.
