Support Team Journey for JacobWe are a team of 20 people, family and friends, participating in The Sears Great Canadian Run to raise money in the fight against kids cancer. We are running in honour of a 4-year old boy, named Jacob Middleton. Here is Jacob's story.
Jacob, a smart, happy, healthy, and very active, 3-year-old boy, showed no signs of illness. Just two weeks after his 3rd birthday, his mother took him to the doctor to check out a lump in his tummy. A day later, on March 18th 2011, he was diagnosed with Stage 4 Wilms Tumor (kidney cancer). Like all families with a child diagnosed with cancer, his family was shocked and never dreamed their son would have to endure what he has gone through. It was at that point, life would change forever.
Jacob's medical team at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto quickly took steps to proceed with his treatment plan: surgery to remove the tumor the size of two adult fists, the left kidney, adrenal gland and several lymph nodes; following surgery, six radiation treatments to the abdomen, and chemotherapy treatment for 25 weeks. At the onset of diagnosis, the cancer had spread to Jacob's left lung, and was eradicated after 6 weeks of chemotherapy. On September 20th, Jacob finished chemo treatment, and in October, he had clear scans and no sign of disease.
To the shock of family and friends, on January 12th 2012, Jacob's cancer returned to his left lung; three tumours were discovered. Again, the medical team jumped into action quickly and on January 23rd, Jacob had surgery to remove the tumours from the lung, a surgery that could only be conducted at Sick Kids, and started intensive chemotherapy treatment on January 31st. Jacob had stem cells harvested on March 6th, and had two weeks of radiation treatment to the left lung in April. Today, Jacob continues on with chemotherapy treatment. Jacob is fortunate to receive treatment at one of the top pediatric oncology centres in the world.
This year on September 22nd, team Journey for Jacob will again run 120 km from Toronto to Blue Mountain in the Sears Great Canadian Run: The Relay Race to End Kids Cancer. We strongly believe in supporting the Sick Kids Cancer Clinic and Pediatric Oncology research. It is through research conducted at centres like The Hospital for Sick Children that create new treatment protocols using drugs and treatments to minimize the damage to the body, while eradicating cancer cells.
