Hey Guys
Currently I am living in Mississauga and thinking of buying a home at HV. My first concern is the jobs available in Milton. I work in downtown Toronto so I will not have any problem but I am wondering if i can find any general labour job like light packaging and stuff for my wife.
Another concern is the school for my kid, I am looking for a home at Derry/Trudeau. Do any of you guys know the school around and how far is it.
I also read about the power plant construction in this area. So I dont know is it really gonna depreciate the land value in coming years or what are the consequences.

If any of you could put a light on my concerns about that would be really appreciated.

maybe we're biased, but HV is a great place to live!

not sure what exactly your wife would be looking for in terms of work, but almost every store, restaurant, etc. has help wanted posters up.. and there are many industries that have facilities in Milton.. you just have to drive down steeles, nipissing or bronte rd N of Derry..

as for schools.. you mention the Derry & Trudeu area. if you live in that area, but North of Derry your kids would go to Bruce Trail Public School or the "Milton 3" Catholic school opening in september. if you live south of derry road your kids would go to Hawethorne Village Public School or either Gaurdian Angels Catholic school or Milton 3, depending on which side of trudeau and how far south.. confusing, i know. in all cases i think your kids would be bussed. not 100%, though.

as for the power plant decreasing your home value... the jury is still out there are many threads discussing this...

Milton.ca will have some info about schools in the area. They have Map for locations, for sure.
Jobs like you mentioned are here and they are developing big industrial area among 401.
As for the pricing of the house. Absolutely no reason to worry about.
GTA is getting about 100K of new Canadians at every possible year. It is almost the size of Milton population. They all need place too. So houses pricing will keep going up no matter what is going to be build here. If fact, people already buying houses in Milton which are going to be almost at 401.

Thank you themasons, your comments will help me a lot in my decision. One more query in mind if you can answer is If I have to travel down to Mississauga or Burlington or Oakville in winter snow season what is the best way and is it not hard to drive there because I see the roads are single lane only eg. Derry. I havent checked Britannia though

25 is good most of the times.
Most easy for driving will be Trafalgar Road.
Go down to Dundas and it is not busy to west at this road in the mornings.
Two more minutes down and QEW is all yours.

I've moved a lot of people from Mississauga to HV and whenever I see them and say hi, they tell me it's the best move they've ever made.

Thank you so much for your replies and opinions. I am so gratefull to all of you.
I personally like the place a lot and my only concern was job for my wife. Currently she is working in Mississauga and I am worried if she would be able to drive easily to Mississauga in winter snow season or if she can find a similar job locally.

one more thing about schools.. if you are looking for an area that your kids can walk to school.. the public board is building a new school in the new area SW of Derry/Thompson on the other side of the big neighbourhood park(that is suppose to be finished fall of this year) slated to open sept '08 (although there are rumours of delays due to an OMB dispute ) there are a few homes for sale in that area...not sure if that would interest you. and don't mind the mud.. they will be done construction by the end of summer in our phase

My husband commutes from Milton to Brampton every day and he drives (he takes Steeles). He has never had an issue with the driving, in fact, he really prefers it to the commute he used to have to do on the 401! I wouldn't worry about your wife driving from Milton to the surrounding cities.

what about renting a basement? Is it easy to rent here

They're still allowed in Milton. It is fairly strict though. It has to be a detached dwelling, in an urban area (no semi-detached or townhouse basement apts allowed). You need a minimum of 3 parking spaces for the dwelling. You need an independent entrance for the basement. It can only be a maximum of 700sqft. It requires a kitchen (which you'd need a building permit to install). Lots of other zoning bylaws probably you'd have to follow.

Also in any city/town there are usually some basement apartments that exist which technically aren't strictly legal. I lived in one for couple years after university.

Do any of you guys commute to Oakville, brampton or Mississauga area thru transit. Is it easily available? I am planning to buy a home at Derry/Trudeau area.

I don't think there is any transit at all to Brampton or Oakville, and for Mississauga there is the GO bus and train, you can check the GO website for times and stops.
