So Mattamy wants to charge me 110 to put in an additional phone jack. Am I correct in thinking that this guy can do it a lot cheaper? Only problem is I dont move till next March so hopefully I wont lose his info.

Adding extras are relatively cheap. I add quite a bit of extras to Mattamy houses and know them quite well.

Do you really think radius is an issue for Cat5e? As long as you don't tie the cable in a knot or pinch it you shouldn't have an issue.

To meet TIA standards and to get it certified, you will not want to bend it more than about 4x the radius. To get all cabling to a certified state is NOT a cheap option and it's rarely done outside of high-end commercial or datacentres.

As for cat5e being replaced by cat6, I disagree. It's still at least 50% more in cost compared to 5e. The majority of CE devices that require wiring are also using cat5e as their spec cable. This includes products from Russound, Colorado vNet, Control 4, Proficient Audio, etc..

cat5e is used for more than just networking.

Mattamy will do it for you. But you will pay big $$$ for it. I have installed structured cable in several Mattamy homes over the past couple of years prior to the drywall going up. If you contact your "builder" (the person in charge of your house) they will usually allow you to go in and do it yourself. When you ask just specify that you will be running low voltage cable.

I believe a conduit from the basement to the attic is reasonable in price. Around $200.

Ultimately you would want to run smurf tube to every room and home run it, but that is a huge job because it requires a lot of drilling of big holes.
