I'm surprised at how busy Yates is compared to Clarke (going westbound towards Thompson). I always use Clarke now because it's a wider road and less traffic. I'm sure that'll change in time.

The new lights will make it even more busy, that's why I was against them.

Dakaardian...we get it....you don't want them!

As for the rest of us, I am looking forward to being able to safely cross Thompson without risking the life of everyone in my car when I try to use this intersection.

I have seen two near misses with some serious swerving the last three days. These lights are needed and I can't wait until they are ready.

As for the comment about our resources being maxed out....we get that too, but our Councellor did state that they were to be done mid October and I don't think there is any harm in getting clarification as to when they will be turned on especially since it is now December. Thanks Anthony for asking, I was wondering the same thing!

It may increase speeding but maybe at most about 10 feet or so from the intersection, so most of the road will not be effected by increased speeding. I've never heard of so much debate before about lights going up at an intersection. I guess we'll find out what's best after their up and operational for a while.

Only 10 feet will be affected.....yeah right.

If someone is on Yates...close to the park and just saw the lights turn to green....I am sure that person will speed to make sure they cross before the lights changed.

I see it on Derry every day. From 200 feets out, they will speed up to beat the light.

I don't disagree but with anything in life, you can't prevent stupidity.

Those lights are an absolute neccessity and the likelihood that some idiot will speed up is true of every street that has lights and is certainly not exclusive to the Yates/Thompson intersection.

S.

My opinion if you don't like it....move. :D That's what I'm doing as I find my street has become too busy so we found a nice, quieter street in HVE.

Hi everyone
Sorry for the delay. Understand from Paul Cripps the Town Engineer that the signals are ready to go, just waiting for a provincial inspector to certify them for operation. Hoping to have the inspection done this week or next and have the traffic lights operational later next week.

Will updated everyone as soon as I know.

With that out of the way, when is Thompson getting the final paving?

Thx

The light will not improve things....speeding on Thompson/ Yates will increase.

Crossing will be a little easier but think about when the lights turn yellow, everyone will speed up to beat the lights. When one is coming down Yates and the lights turn yellow...the same thing will happen....drivers will speed up to beat the lights.

Speeding will increase!!!!!!

Speed bumps in both direction should help people reduce their speed.

The lights arent really just for Yates west of Thompson, its for the hundreds of homes now occupied on the east side of Thompson. I feel bad for those people having to turn left to get to Derry. Ive seen it where its been well over 5 minutes for someone to get out SAFELY.

Its been a pain waiting but with the resources the town has, it takes time. Installing lights and making them work will do nothing unless there are some lines painted. Believe it or not, people need those too.

I'll belive it when I see it.

I received an email update today from Heide who works for the town's Engineering department regarding these lights:

The activation of the traffic control signals at the intersection of Thompson Road and Yates Drive is scheduled to take place tomorrow (December 13, 2007) according to the contractor.

With respect to the delay in the turn on, I know there were some electrical power issues as the underground work was done through Mattamy's contractor but the power supply was never inspected through ESA. This has all been completed now. There was also some sidewalk work to be completed and the pavement markings still need to be put down.

So, I guess they're almost done. Good news for those who want to see them turned on.

Anthony

Yes the lights at Thompson and Yates are on...those of us who live on the street will be checking to see if theres any increase/decrease in traffic. I have a hunch it wont be too bad unless theirs a problem at Derry and Thompson...and even without lights, people would be using Yates so...wait and see approach.

As for the Stop Sign / Speed bump situation...I havent heard from the Ward one councillors yet and nothing back from the engineering department on the results of the traffic study and when those results will be presented to council.

My suggestion would be to call/email/write letters to the Champion encouraging council to do something at this intersection. When I came around the first time to get people to sign a petition many said they would write a letter, but the paper hasnt received anything yet.

Send me an email mike@mikecluett.ca and I will add your name to the list (virtual signatures) and CC brian.penman@milton.ca and rick@daylaw.ca as well.

Lets keep up the noise.

Yep, they're on. Today I was turning right on Thompson from Yates (west side of Thompson), and someone zipped by on my left and turned left right through the RED LIGHT, didn't even check for it. Force of habit, I guess, but wow could someone get smacked into like that. BE CAREFUL guys, eseccially those crossing through along Thompson; expect people to turn left on red or drive across for the first while.

I dont think habit is an excuse here. Those lights are pretty noticeable and cant really be missed. If youre missing them...you are doing something you shouldnt be doing or you shouldnt be driving....period.

I live half way up the street and at night the lights are hard to miss...and during the day they cant be missed.

Drive careful folks.
