I'm very ill over this decision to build this school and to learn that what we thought was protected farm land across the street from our new home, is now going to be a school or school parking lot and Lord knows what else.

I don't think the escarpment NEEDS a university. The location makes no sense for commuting students unless they use the farm next to it to build a Go-Station. Is that next? sheesh.

It would be the best to us if this area can be kept as protected farm land forever, but I really doubt that! Who can promise? So if something must be built in this area in the future, I think University may be much better choice than anything else.

Why are people thinking that land was going to stay as farmland?
Quote:
No the Mattamy lands are not useless as the lands fronting onto Tremaine Road south of the first farm at Derry Road are in the Provincial Places to Grow Act for future urban areas which the Region of Halton MUST amend its Official Plan by June 2009 to conform.
That land was going to be changed into future urban areas with urban density levels laid out by the province (not town).... Might have been some condos etc... It was NOT going to stay as farms. If the university doesn't go there, some urban density is.

What would you rather have, a nice university campus over that land? Or density housing there? Between the two, to me, the university would be the obvious choice. Brings jobs and income to the town, etc.

Under no realistic scenario can I think of would that land have stayed as farms. Well... I guess if there's a vote of no confidance in the provincial government, and if the new government tired to overturn that old places to grow act, etc. The possibility of provincial government falling isn't unlrealistic, but I don't think a new provincial govenment would overturn that act....so realistically people have to expect some mandated urban development in Milton imposed on us by the province. At least that's how I was reading things last time I checked.

150 acres backing into the escarpment? Still trying to wrap my head around it - why would Mattamy give it up for only 5 acres?

My theory? Maybe Mattamy will be the builder of choice for the on-site residential, campus, etc... everything! All paid by University and Provincial funds...(and who ever else is responsible for funding). That's the only thing I can think of... Or maybe they will get an IOU from the town for their next approval request... Or maybe 30 Days or its FREE service for permit approvals...

OK, no more conspiracy theories, I promise :)

Aren't all our new homes on once very fertile farm land? Why is it suddenly wrong to develop west of Tremaine (or other parts of Milton)? Why are the HVE homes (right beside the escarpment) okay but more development not okay? I'd feel like a hypocrite if I said 'stop developing' yet I have a nice big home beside the escarpment built by the giant called Mattamy. I feel I have no right to say that. I came to Milton knowing it'll eventually be a Mississauga, so maybe that's why it doesn't bother me. I do favour the campus over other types of development for sure.

This is how I understand it, but I may be wrong.

Mattamy took a gamble with that plot of land. They bought it years ago with the hopes of building subdivisions. Recently, they were denied the okay to go ahead with developing residential subdivisions. This does not mean that the land is "Protected" from any development, just from residential HVE-style subdividions. This land, then, is pretty much useless to mattamy, where as the five acres downtown have MASSIVE potential for them. (This is why they would do the swap, as asked in the other post)

The town and WLU plan to spend the next three years studying what it would take, including rezoning and funding, to make it happen. But for now, at least, the land on offer from the town is appealing for a university that has run out of space on its 60-acre Waterloo campus.

I think it's a GREAT idea! Think of all the adults who will want to return to school to further their education, and all the teenagers in Milton (and surrounding areas) that will want to go school in Milton. I think it's a wonderful idea, and I hope it gets approved!

I'm a fellow Golden Hawk too!!

Considering the grades you need just to be accepted to WLU; I can't foresee any major problems with the student body. The land would be developed eventually so I personally would rather a great university than a commercial development utilize the land.

I'm a firm believer of the "living in res" experience. It will be nice to know if my two choose WLU (fingers crossed), that mummy and daddy will only be a few minutes away :)

I swear I only ever threw up on my own lawn

You are right about the frat house risk...a frat lived above me before they had their house and it was a tad bit loud at times.
